Description: JoJo offers relaxed yet elegant dining on two floors of a quaint, turn-of-the-century brownstone on the Upper East Side. The first of Jean-Georges’ restaurants in New York City, this neighborhood gem opened in 1991 to rave reviews. It was voted best new restaurant of the year by Esquire magazine and has retained its three-star status from the New York Times for 21 years. Regarding the name, JoJo was Chef Jean-Georges’ nickname as a young boy. Jojo is a hospitable setting for a casual dinner, special occasion, or private party. Guests can feel comfortable in jeans or in evening attire. The contemporary French menu still features some well-loved original dishes, including the Warm Valrhona Chocolate Cake.

Top class service and tasteful dining. The Lamb chop dish was heavenly.
It is a small, great atmosphere place.
You will enjoy every second.

“Not the best meal I've ever had”
Reviewed October 7, 2013

But the food at Jo-Jo's is terrific. I can't say enough about the atmosphere also. Its quiet; its set in an old brownstone- like building with several rooms, each of which has several tables. Also the service was lovely.

“Very good food, Really depressing interior. does atmosphere matter?”
Reviewed October 5, 2013

How important is atmosphere for you when you're at dinner? I used to think that i didn't mind the surroundings if the food blew me away. Most foodies love to gloat about their hole in the wall discoveries. But this was an unexpected deviation. The interior is very traditional, it looks like an old grandma's tiny, claustrophobic, long-forgotten guest bedroom in the basement. (except its on the ground floor) One of the Arsenic and Old Lace type of old ladies-sweet but would put you out of your misery with a smile. Anyway, the night we were there, there were many, many diners in the over 80 set who came to dine. Normally, I don't pay attention to the diners but this was a fairly consistent group. I felt bad for some who had some special walking needs because, in typical NYC fashion, the tables were a tight fit into the banquettes and challenging to get out of if you needed to use the restroom. the decor is quite faded and worn and the dim lighting doesn't give atmosphere but actually casts a forlorn view on the efficient and professional staff. My husband begged me not to get dessert because he felt somewhat suffocated, but I persisted so I could put up a complete review.
Now for the food: We started with a shredded raw kale salad with lemon and parmesan. Not bad, but not that interesting either. the croutons on it were probably homemade but tasted like the plain kind you get from a box.
my husband had a JOJO burger which was pricey ($27) but standard upscale burger price for NYC. the crunchy onions on top were quite fantastic and the fries that came with it were obviously freshly made. I had one of their signature dishes with poached lobster and lemon risotto. It was quite delicious with tender lobster and a very fragrant and flavorful al dente risotto. The desserts were sour cream cheesecake which was very good and sour in a really good way. My dessert was an excellent a passion fruit pavlova, which is passion fruit sorbet in a lemon meringue shell with passion fruit seeds on top. With my first bite, I was automatically whisked away to a tropical vacation on a beach with swaying palm trees . Really transcendent.
So the summary: really good food, pretty reasonable prices for upper east side, not incredibly imaginative menu but very well made food- BUT served in a dining room that was cramped, with low ceilings, muted lighting and heavy, printed drapes with fuzzy tassels from a few centuries ago. The atmosphere sort of killed it for us but if you are ok with dismal country french decor, you'll have a great meal.

“JoJo”

This is a wonderful culinary experience. The wait staff was pleasant and informed, the food presentation and favors were very good. It has a very old school quiet and graciousness about the ambience. A bit too quiet perhaps but in a romantic way.

“Recommend this French Restaurant”
Reviewed September 4, 2013

I went with my family for a birthday dinner. It was very nice. Very decent restaurant with reasonable (for NYC) prices. The dining room is lovely. The service is quite good. We ordered a bottle of wine with dinner, and it was excellent.
