“American style fast food”
Reviewed August 22, 2013

This is what you can see in the movies: you sit infront of the desk, throw your order to a man with a hat and he gives you normal home made food in a second. You can eat a bunch of everything with a ridiculous price and staff are very warm and friendly! You can also order spanish language.

“Authentic Puerto Rican food, good prices”
Reviewed July 16, 2013

The food was affordable and was served fast. It tasted good but for me it needed more flavor/salt, particularly the beans and rice. The staff was nice. It is nice to come across a place like this in the middle of manhattan though.

“Medium-price Spanish/Latin Food”
Reviewed June 13, 2013

This is a very small restaurant with tables against one wall and counter space for eating. This is very old-fashioned with the orders going back and forth from kitchen in the back to the diners; the service is fast and furious. The clientele is a mix of office/laborer people. The food is relatively true to Spanish and close to a home-cooked spanish meal. The difference being a home cooked meal would be a lot tastier as this food is cook to also please the palate of non-Spanish people. The price is good for a NYC restaurant; i.e., US$9 to $15 for something like a shrimp dish. The CAFE CON LECHE [steamed sweet milk with coffee] is decent. Their desserts like Flan is also decent.

Overall, the food is good and so is the price. Only one warning: Don't plan to sit around for long, it's a place where you eat and leave quickly. People are usually standing around waiting for a table. Well worth the visit, but don't expect attention to detail, waiters are just too busy for that.

“Service great at this Puerto Rican hole-in-the-wall”
Reviewed April 8, 2013

I was nostalgic for the Taza De Oro of my childhood: impeccable food when Papi didn't want Mami to cook and hauled us in the '69 Lincoln Continental with the suicide doors.

Impeccable is not the word I'd use to describe the food at this time, but really dry, generic yellow rice and beans (dare I say) from the can. The food was edible, recession-proof prices and the ambiance the same, with two of the same staff still there from back in the day, with less hair and more wrinkles. Regulars tend to belly up on the revolving bar stools and share stories of the 'hood with the staff.

Two positives that allowed me to give them three stars instead of two: service is still attentive and the Pollo al Horno (Oven-baked chicken) was juicy and delicious. I will say that if you've never had Puerto Rican food, give this a try, but if you know our cuisine, you might be a bit disappointed.

I'm glad I went for the nostalgia factor but sad this down-home spot is past its heyday. La Taza de Oro is now gold-plated.

“Tasty, cheap, very friendly”
Reviewed April 6, 2013 via mobile

Tasty food, fast and friendly service. You can get a sizable lunch here for less than $10 including tax and tip. Mofongo is only decent, but you can't beat it for $6. Bistec encebollado (steak and onions) comes with your choice of beans and your choice of rice - a total steal at $8.50.
