The best burgers and breakfasts on the upper West. No frills just huge and well prepared food and diner style efficiency A New York institution and one of the biggest menus I have seen

The place is a total dive but it was packed when we were there. The food was great and the service was authentic grumpy New Yorker. It was well priced but a little intimidating for an outsider like me especially if you want to use the washroom, which is past several "employees only" "do not enter" signs.

“old-school comfort food”
Reviewed April 8, 2013

was back in the old neighborhood after being away a long time (left NY--and the Upper West Side--literally days before 9/11). big nick's was one of those joints i also MEANT to go to but never did. every time i'd get down around that area (lived on w. 122nd), my feet would somehow take me to the new wave cafe, another greek diner on b'way near 79th (and, for the record, one i would still recommend). fortunately, i took a chance and finally found out what i had been missing...

i went with 2 other people whom i was showing around town, and we all ended up settling on burgers, plus some spicy waffle fries and a pitcher of ginger ale. the waffle fries were decent, as some people have mentioned previously. the more noteworthy attraction was the burgers.

the 3 of us each ordered our burgers done differently--medium rare; medium; and medium well--and i can say that they were all prepared spot-on to order. this seems to me to be a fairly rare phenomenon, especially where we're splitting hairs between the 3 degrees of done-ness. props to big nick's for getting them quite right. 8-oz burgers all, they were quite substantial and very tasty: mine was really the best burger i've had in quite some time (i chose a barbecue burger with, if i recall correctly, pepper jack cheese: you can build a burger by choosing your toppings, which is always a welcome addition to the menu, IMHO).

finally, the waitress came over with small but very delicious servings of baklava on the house. a very nice touch, and a very happy ending to a great meal at a joint with character oozing out of its pores. here's hoping that the lease matter gets straightened out: i'm planning on getting back to big nick's next time i'm back in town!

p.s. for a laugh, check the prices at five napkins a few blocks up broadway...

“A Lovable Dive for Burgers”
Reviewed April 3, 2013

Rumors are that this long time west side go to burger joint has lost its lease and may move or close. Terrific food from an extensive think Greek diner menu. Juicy burgers at a relatively inexpensive price
