My girlfriend (now fiancee after the evening in question) chose this restaurant and admittedly i was skeptical at first given the pricepoint without being able to review any current menu as the restaurant doesnt post any. I now understand why and can say that my skepticism was not warranted as this was truly a wonderful experience.
First off...this restaurant is more of a performance with a dining experience you wont forget thrown in for good measure. Someone greets you immediately upon entering and they engage you in conversation beyond the normal pleasantries. More often than not, guests who have been fortunate enough to secure a reservation have been googled. You are no stranger when you walk in the door.
The setting reminds me of an old bank building with tall windows and 30 ft ceilings. Everything from the flatware, the stemware, the china was the best possible quality. The service was prompt, engaging, knowledgable, courteous, friendly, fun and elegant. We had 15 courses in our tasting menu...spaced about 10 minutes apart (good cadence makes you forget you're there 3 hours) and had a great experience. The server(s) explain every item in complete detail...and they've already made sure their offerings do not conflict with your preferences/allergies etc. I could talk about each course and tell you how wonderful it was but chances our that your menu will be completely different from mine. You dont feel stuffed when you leave...you might even be hungry actually but i can say with all honesty....the experience is worth the price and then some.
I neglected to mention earlier that they have a wine list the size of a phone book...with rare vintages and special bottles...some of the pricepoints might even resemble phone numbers too :) The sommelier nearby put on a show with heated tongs removing the neck of the wine bottle at the table next to ours...very cool if you've never seen it.
I proposed between the 14th and 15th courses and the chef helped out by placing my ring in the heart of a sunflower and presented it under a dome as it was brought to our table. The evening was a perfect 10 no matter how you slice it. This truly is a great special occasion destination...perhaps one of the best.

Friends presented us with this lunch as a wedding gift and we didn't know much about Eleven Madison (other than it was #4 on the San Pellagrino list) - so we had no real expectations or knowledge of what was coming.

But - what a sensational afternoon! It is so much more than a meal - there is so much thought and care that has gone into the entire experience..... it is really a high class "performance" for food an wine lovers...

We were treated like royalty (but so were the other diners)....the service was impeccable...

The presentation and story of each course is interesting, and different for each one. There is touch of humour in the menu, and our server, certainly delivered it with a touch more...
The room is beautiful - an old banking vault done up beautifully. And importantly the food and wine was devine!

Thank you Mr Humm for such a delightful concept - and to the entire team at Eleven Madison it looks to me like you have the best job in New York!

Mr. Humm and his team do a great job and after dining in several of the top 50 restaurants of the San Pellegrino list, I have to admit, that they deserve the ranking as #4 without doubt. It’s a little less experimental than others in the ranking, but it does not need to be always extra crazy. As it looks like, this is one of the few fine dining restaurants that is profitable without having a mentor in the back and this deserves high appreciation.
The food is surprising, great quality and mixed with a great portion of humour. I like to dine like this, be aware that it takes several hours. There’s only the tasting menu, which I appreciate, as I do not like to choose from too many options. The price seems with US$ 250 appropriate for the experience given (be aware of the 20% service charge).
The wine pairing (we took the small one) is good, but for its price I need to say, not exceptional. You probably want to stick to your own choice or spend more money for the more expensive one. Btw: The restaurant is really nice too with it's high ceilings and all the setting.

You can see why it is #4 in the world. Incredible space, incredible service and pretty good wine pairing( unlike Per Se which does not offer one!!). Good dishes, some memorable like the sodas, the smoked sturgeon and picnic basket. Would go there again for sure
