It is a dark mystery why Eleven Madison has received 3 stars from Michelin. We live in from Europe and we know most of the 3 star Michelin restaurants in Germany, France, Italy and Switzerland plus some of the US and New York City. It is not the question whether this restaurant deserves 3 stars or 2 but whether 3 or zero.
You get one single menu with 15 courses and you cannot choose, ok. But every course was either too salty, too sour or very bizarre. It happened the first time in a restaurant with Michelin stars that there were courses we simply could not eat because of their taste. Some strange sort of a salty mayonnaise in an ostrich egg, e.g. Other courses are more the sort of a bad joke, a revenge of the cook for causing him work? A cracker, dot. Or to grind carrots at the table for a carrot only salad and give the guest some spices to mix all himself. Or to put milk, chocolate and olive oil in a glass and shake it for a strange drink. Or serve cheese with beer. After a certain time we were afraid of what will come next.
The restaurant itself is a cold uncomfortable hall with a very windy air-condition. The service was a kind of a gastronomical version of Chaplin’s Modern Times. A very big staff serves the dishes in record time. Industrialized, to get rid of the guest as quick as possible ? At least we felt so.
Simply don’t go there.
