“Best breakfast place for miles (if anywhere) in NYC”
Reviewed April 27, 2012

Ate here first morning in town, loved the food, service was attentive, coffee refills which tasted great came thick and fast, price was very good, and the decor is really relaxing. I'd spend fifteen minutes or three hours here. Food servings good size, tasted great, loved it.

Thoroughly recommend.

Great little French cafe with good sandwiches and salads and light meals. Very French ambiance and atmosphere including chilly service.

“We love this cozy and lively 24-hour restaurant.”
Reviewed January 31, 2012

French Roast Cafe Downtown has something for everyone on its menu and seems to be a favorite spot for locals and visitors alike. We have eaten there many times over the past several months.

Bearing a rustic look, complete with French signs and posters, French Roast has charm as well as a great menu, and also has a bar. From sandwiches and salads to cassoulets and other entrees, everything we have ordered has been delicious. For dessert, try the banana cream pie or the apple almond tart!

The coffee is delicious . During the week, French Roast has a breakfast, lunch, dinner, and after midnight menu. On weekends, there is a brunch menu during the day. You can view their menu online--it's accurate. With NYU and The New School right nearby, I would think students, faculty, and parents frequent French Roast. Prices are pretty good for a great NY eatery.

“French food, french waitress, french wine - on a sidewalk. GREAT”
Reviewed September 23, 2011

The last night before a cruise out of Brooklyn and we'd prowled Chelsea, Tribeca and Soho for a just right place to enjoy our last night in the city this trip. We love France, its people and its food and saw French Roast. The amibience is brasserie with the offer of sidewalk seating at sunset. We lucked out with our waitress (newly from France, and looking like Marion Cotillard). We tried their Mussels Provençal (served quickly and hot with a crisp white wine, garlic and tomato sauce. My wife's Steak frites was just as she wanted it and my lamb was perfectly done. The service was unobtrusive, prompt and enjoyable. The recommended wine was also quite good and their wine list (and prices) were brasserie styled - welcoming and repeatable.

We enjoyed it so much we returned, with others, for breakfast the next morning (you've got to try their so delicious coffee!)

Informal, delightful, brasserie food and drink on a Friday night in NYC. A great ending to a great visit!

“Pleasant breakfast in the Village”
Reviewed November 13, 2009

We visited the French Roast Cafe in the Village in early November as part of our trip to NYC. We were staying in the Flatiron District (part of the Village-ish area of Manhattan) and found this place wandering around one morning looking for a sit-down breakfast place.

The cafe has a really funky feel to it. It's decorated with many metal vintage signs and lots of old wood furniture. The signs are mostly in french to give it a more 'Parisian' feel. As native Ottawans with a good command of french, this gave us a funny impression, but we went with it.

We ordered eggs and sausage and french toast and fresh squeezed OJ. The juice is worth the trip alone. Very yummy and we each had two glasses. The french toast was very tasty with a nice side of fresh fruit. The sausage was so so, but the fresh bread that came with it made up for any lack lustre meats.

What made this restaraunt even more pleasant were the service and the chilled out clientele. People were moving at a relaxed pace. Our server was very nice and gave us a lot of great pointers about the city. He even went out and pulled out his own map of the city to give us directions to central park.

The meal was reasonably priced, but not cheap. If you are look for a 2.99 breakfast, you should probably look elsewhere. When we go back to NYC, I would stop by this place again for sure.
