“Welcome smiles, great non-pretentious dining: Am I home?”
Reviewed November 23, 2012

Playwright's is one of our favorite, non-pretentious, places to dine in NYC. The location on 49th and Broadway is great in every way. The welcome you will receive will make you feel as if you're part of the Irish family that runs the place from the moment you enter the door. The restaurant upstairs is always warmly decorated for each season and, depending upon where you are seated, can offer a view of the hustle and bustle of 49th and Broadway.

The food isn't fancy, nor is it presented in a 'fine cuisine' manner, but it is some of the best home-style cooking to be found in NYC! We've gone there a few times for Thanksgiving (including a visit yesterday), and also for other occasions when we're in NYC. Yesterday's meal included a butternut squash soup that had a hint of dill and digon that set it above and apart from anything we've ever tasted before -- incredible! The roast turkey dinner, homemade stuffing, and seasonal vegetables were each delicious and perfectly done. And the dessert (apple pie and homemade chocolate cake) were perfect too.

If you want something incredibly fancy with service that is exquisite, Playwrights may not be our first recommendation. But, if you want a great home-cooked-style meal, in a warm and welcoming atmosphere, along with friendly service (as if your favorite aunt was bringing dinner to your table), then this is the place in NYC. Relax, eat well, adn enjoy. We always do.

“AWESOME”
Reviewed November 19, 2012

My fiance and I were on our way to a show and were pressed for time when we heard the man outside of the Playwright and we decided lets do it. We have now found a new place that we will regularly visit when we are in NYC. Great food and fantastic service.

“Busy pub”
Reviewed October 31, 2012

Great pub, good food, very busy, very loud, price's reasonable, friendly people, wonderful Irish atmosphere, portions too big for us to handle so we opted for Buffalo wings (6 monsters) and ribs (6 even bigger) with fries which was just enough, but be warned the wings a very spicy to which my wife witnessed

“Great pub in Times Square”

Recommended by a friend so we gave it try. We ended up there every night! Relaxed atmosphere and friendly staff. Great for sport and a drink after a long day sightseeing.

“Try the Irish food here!!”
Reviewed October 24, 2012

This is not too bad if you want a reasonable menu. Good portions of good food. I would recommend the Irish inspired food. The Guiness stew is excellent. They could do with a better dessert menu though as the choice was not inspiring. Just a stones throw from the Times Square hotels so handy. Waiting staff were good and efficient. There isoften live music playing downstairs so if you like that, this is the place for you.
