This is one of my favorite izakaya's in the city. Both times I've been the food and drinks were excellent. Your typical eclectic mix of Japanese bar food. Great yakitori among other things. Fun for small groups so you can try everything. The sake selection is good and inexpensive. Only downside is they don't take reservations and you may have to wait a bit for a table. Have a drink while you do.

“Great place”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 18, 2014

Eight of us went to MEW and four of us were unfamiliar with Japanese food. We loved it. Great diversity in the menu that still remains tidy and coherent. Great service and very price-worthy. A real hit.

“Be brave and go down the stairs!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 11, 2014 via mobile

I visited here for a quick lunch between meetings in Manhattan having found it on Tripadvisor. The restaurant is hard to find and the first impressions at street level aren't great. However, if you ignore the somewhat tatty looking menu near the door and the very uninviting staircase to the basement then you will be rewarded.

The restaurant is very informal and was very busy on a Friday lunchtime. The welcome was warm and my waitress was very happy to make recommendations from the menu. I had a simple meal of edamame beans followed by salmon with rice, pickles, a small salad and miso soup. Everything came quickly, was well prepared and the salmon was delicious. The meal was also very good value for money.

Overall this is well worth a try for a quick lunch or an informal evening with friends or family.

We went with friends, it was a bit noisy and really difficult to find but it was worth it. The shushi was really good and there was a lot of Asian people eating. It wasn't expensive and the place really cool. The best thing is that despite it is in the center of manhattan there weren't any tourists!

“Fantastic Japanese small plates”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 28, 2014 via mobile

OMG this restaurant takes me back to Tokyo. It's hard to find. I stood outside looking for it for 5 min. It's downstairs into a basement. Very busy but filled with 90 % Japanese and Koreans. Great ambiance. Lots of small plates and sushi. Reasonably priced and great food.

I had salmon onigiri - a rice ball which I used to eat as street food in Akasaka. Deep fried squid legs and grilled mackerel all just perfect. Some interesting white ale. Japanese local beer.

This is a real experience wanna come back soon.
