Description: America's first fine dining restaurant, Delmonico's has been serving fine American food to New York's connoisseurs in its premier location at the heart of Manhattan's financial district. Since opening at 56 Beaver Street in 1837, Delmonico's has been renowned as the birthplace of the Delmonico Steak, Delmonico Potatoes, Eggs Benedict, Lobster Newburg, and Baked Alaska. Upon opening, the original Delmonico's offered then-unheard of luxuries such as private dining rooms, an extensive wine cellar, innovative cuisine, and, above all, warm, personal service. Today, the restaurant continues to honour its heritage with the same warm hospitality and fine cuisine. Delmonico's menu features a range of traditional dishes in addition to the prime Delmonico Steak, aged to perfection in the aging room. Having introduced many dishes and dining customs to America, to dine at Delmonico's is to experience history.

“It was alright - not spectacular.”
Reviewed February 25, 2014

We were there during one of the "restaurant weeks" - where top restaurants offer smaller portions and bargain prices for "those people" to try. I say "those people" because that's what we were greeted with by the server. It was funny, seriously, I laughed. We weren't "those people" - we ordered from the regular menu. I had the Delmonico Steak - which they're known for. . . it was good, even though I got an eye-roll when I ordered it medium-well. I also had the Delmonico Potatoes - not as good as I had hoped, had a thick layer of cheese that wasn't to my taste, but someone else liked them. We were stuffed, but ordered the chocolate caramel torte to share. The waiter asked how we liked it, I replied "it was alright' . . . and received another round of eye-roll! (Absolutely hilarious!) The base of the torte was crunchy as though it was dried out or over-cooked, it was hard to get a fork through, the chocolate/caramel sauce did not have much flavor. When you're spending $100+ per person, you expect everything to be more than "ok." I'm rating this a 4 due to the good service of the staff, the history of the place and the steak was very good quality - after all it is a steak house. And I must emphasis that the reaction of the waiter was fantastically humorous - he still was a good waiter - his reaction actually made our visit that much more fun!

“Good.”
Reviewed February 9, 2014

Went here around Christmas for a good classy New York dining experience.
Delmonico's is an institution, and nothing anyone here is going to say about it is going to change that.
The place has ambiance to die for, fine interior detail, wood paneling, chandeliers, old world charm galore, you can smell, taste and feel old New York here.
The waiting staff is attend and courteous, but that really should be a given in a place like this.
Which brings us to the food, its a bit of a conundrum, when viewed objectively the food served here is very good, there is no doubt about that, but hey, this is Delmonico's, and the food should be held to a higher standard, certainly the bill you receive reflects this.
So the food ordered was the Delmonico steak, seemed appropriate to order the signature dish at the restaurant that pretty much invented it, the steak was good, cooked right, and there are no complaints whatsoever...but I somehow expected to be blown away by the steak, I did not want a "good" steak, I wanted a mind blowing steak, to that extend Delmonico's did not deliver.
My girlfriend ordered the other dish made famous by this restaurant, the well known Lobster Newberg, that dish suffered from the same ailment, beside being conspicuously small it was "just good", but not "wow this is fantastic".
So there it is, if you want good food in a classy old New York City setting and don't mind paying premium money for the experience you will like this place.
On the other hand, if you are a steak lover that wants to be blown away, you might want to stick to Peter Luger in nearby Brooklyn.
On a final note, there is a bar located just of the dining room, maybe we just timed our visit wrong, but the screaming and loud noises coming out of that bar were not conducive to the intimate experience one is hoping to get here.

“Perfect, thick-cut, New York Steak”
Reviewed February 7, 2014

Top-notch service in the heart of Manhattan's business district, and it did not disappoint. The restaurant is known for being a historic landmark where presidents have dined. The decor and ambiance definitely gives you that "you've arrived" feeling. I would not classify this as overly expensive since the portions are very generous, however, you would not be getting your money's worth if you did not come hungry.
