Have been customers of this restaurant for over 20 years. Ordered in food in September right after they re- opened. Food was tasteless and my daughter and I were nauseous all night. We tried it again last night and the food was again tasteless. The Weiner schnitzel and chicken schnitzel were all breading and no meat. Again, I felt nauseous from the food. We will not eat here again nor order in.

After a great morning at the Central Park, we needed a great big lunch. We decided to go to Heidelberg, based on previous tripadvisor reviews, which sounded great. The restaurant is hidden from view, because of the construction work on 2nd avenue. It is run by a family, maybe for generations, and seemed to be immensly popular. The ambience is nice and cheerful, the atmosphere is great and the decor is cozy. There is a great selection of beers - we ordered for one of the wheat beers, which was really outstanding. We ordered for a Red Pepper Chicken and a sausage platter, which had three different types of sausages. The portions are huge - enough for two adults and a 10 year old, who were really hungry!! The sausages were out of this universe, and the gravy of the chicken transports you straight to paradise!! We paid USD 75 for two beers and two main courses, which was definitely worth it. The service was fantastic, with the widest smiles :)))) I will definitely return for more!!! Highly recommended!!

If good German food and a fun atmosphere is what you're looking for the this is the restaurant. Great food, beer and service. Keep supporting it because the subway construction is right outside their door.

I had the pleasure of sharing dinner with some friends here the other night and the whole experience was nothing short of fantastic. We opted for the ham hock dinner for four (even though there was only three of us) and we ended up with the best of everything on the menu.

Our service was excellent, with prompt beer refills and we were allowed to linger at our table for much longer than expected, even on a Saturday night.

What you need to know:
- The menu is meat centric; meat lovers will be in heaven
- The beers are excellent and are served in litre stiens; order one stien for the amusement of it
- Order half liters for the rest of your evening; the beer stays cooler that way
- The shared plates are the way to go; ham hock for four was amazing
- Come early, Come late for your best pick at tables - peek dinner hours between 6.00pm and 9.00pm
- I did observe some tables that could take 10 or 12 people; best to call in advance for those
- Save room for desert, the strudel is as you would expect; amazing.
- This place is located on second avenue between 85th and 86th street; there is a long term construction project going on though so you can only see the location from the pavement, not from the avenue or in a taxi passing by.
-Have Fun!

Amazing--hard to believe you can find this place in Manhattan, yet there it is....traditional as all get out, wonderful portions and a beer list to match--yes, liters are an option--this place is a trip to Bavaria. Be prepared to compare all other German cuisine to this benchmark--so good, it should almost be listed under tourist destinations as well as restaurants!
