Husband and I took our friend out for her birthday. She lives in New York and chose Isle of Capri; we now understand why. The bread was crispy and crunchy ~ just the way I like it. I wanted a glass of wine but couldn't decide between a Shiraz or a Cabernet. No problem! The helpful, attentive waiter brought me a sampling of each. (The Cabernet won out.) Everything we ordered was outstanding. The Caesar salad was wonderful, with crisp lettuce and croutons, creamy dressing and just a hint of anchovies. The fried calamari was crunchy crispy coated but tender inside, and completely non-greasy. It was served with the best marinara sauce any of us had ever had, Including our Italian friend. The daughter of the restaurant founder (now deceased) was kind enough to share withnus how it was made. The clams oreganato, not on many restaurant menus, were fabulous ~ plump, moist, tender clams entirely covered by a crisp breadcrumbs topping. My friend and I each had a daily special of naked branzino, served filleted and drizzled with herb infused olive oil. My husband raved about his sausage and peppers and my friend loved her veal Marsala. Portions were huge; none of us could finishmour dishes so we sent our friend home with lots of doggie bags. Each entree came with sides of roasted potato and sautéed spinach with sliced garlic. Very Italian! The restaurant provided a plate of cookies, a nice touch, although we ordered a slice of ricotta cheesecake with three forks. It was the perfect ending to a perfect meal. A glass of lemoncello was offered "on the house" but was declined as nine of us like it. This was a magical evening and we will be sure to return to Isle of Capri when we return to New York for another visit in Oct.
