Whenever we are in NYC, I go out of my way to stop at the Chelsea location to indulge in donuts. The unique and gourmet flavors set this donut establishment apart from the rest.
You can choose from yeast donuts, cake donuts, and "doughseed". I don't always like cake donuts b/c they can be dry, but the cake donuts here are moist and AMAZING. Doughseed variety is just a small round yeast donut filled with interesting flavors (like rose). The yeast donuts are square shaped, and often are not filled but rather, glazed with great flavors like valrhona chocolate or passion fruit. I find that when the yeast donuts are glazed (and not filled inside), the glazed flavor doesn't penetrate through the donut effectively.
In summary, you won't go wrong with the carrot cake donut and the coconut cream filled yeast donuts. Once you try these two classics, you will understand what all the hype is about at the Doughnut Plant.
Tip: lines can be long on weekends, but move quickly. Tables are often filled to capacity, but turn over quickly.
