2nd time my husband and I took out of towners here for brunch. Calle Ocho is inside of a hotel on 81st street. Make a reservation if you can, but you can also get here at 11:30 am for a seating at the lounge--same food and service, but in a lounge atmosphere, eating on coffee tables. It's actually just as nice if not better than the dining room and less noisy if that matters. The dining room will get loud--that's what happens when you get unlimited sangria! Crowd is mostly UWS locals. Sangria is solid, food is great. You get a complimentary basket of mini bread and mini muffin goodies with strawberry butter--yum! I've had the vegetarian mushroom paella and the country omelet with goat cheese and mushrooms. The skirt steak with avocado is excellent as is the Ropa Vieja con Huevos (shredded beef in a tomato-ey sweet-ish sauce with a giant fried egg on top that will ooze onto the beef. Really good! Portions are solid--not extravagantly big and not too small--pricing in 1 or 2 sangrias and the bread basket (which many UWS places will charge you extra for), its a great deal. Just make sure you're ok with a loud brunch place.

Well prepared seafood dishes with Latin influence. Attentive, knowledgeable staff. A good selection of appetizers. On a Friday night the restaurant was crowded and a little noisy but otherwise a good experience.

Had a big group for business dinner .all were impressed food was good, lots of free appetizers, great presentation plus prices are so reasonable.their private room is isolated from main dining room so noise level is low.
The waiters are attentive and friendly...did I say Iove the sangria? Definitely woyld cone back and bring family and friends.

A trendy, buzzy place serving "latin fusion" food, if you like that sort of thing. We were in the neighborhood and thought we'd try it on a Friday night at 8pm with no reservations. The restaurant was quite full, but we got a table with no problem. The restaurant is inside the Excelsior Hotel, and is not well marked on the outside...that block on West 81st Street is not where you'd expect to find a restaurant, especially one serving latin fusion food, so look carefully. You enter the restaurant through the hotel lobby. I am not a big fan of this type of food, but the octopus starter, the pulled pork shoulder, the roasted asparagus and the salmon ceviche were all very good. The service was friendly, although the waiters spoke mostly spanish and seemed a bit new to the job. We were planning to have a leisurely dinner, but our appetizers came instantly and the waiter kept coming back to see if we were done. One hostess, however, was fabulous. She clearly was alerted by our waiter that we were eating slowly, and came to our table to tell us that she would instruct the kitchen to slow things down, and asked us how long we wanted to wait until our main courses were served. We told her, and that is exactly what happened. Very nicely done.

The food was great, but nothing special. The service was very good! The place is charming and makes you feel like you are in Cuba. I would recommend this.
