“Latin Fusion Across From the Museum of Natural History”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 15, 2014

A trendy, buzzy place serving "latin fusion" food, if you like that sort of thing. We were in the neighborhood and thought we'd try it on a Friday night at 8pm with no reservations. The restaurant was quite full, but we got a table with no problem. The restaurant is inside the Excelsior Hotel, and is not well marked on the outside...that block on West 81st Street is not where you'd expect to find a restaurant, especially one serving latin fusion food, so look carefully. You enter the restaurant through the hotel lobby. I am not a big fan of this type of food, but the octopus starter, the pulled pork shoulder, the roasted asparagus and the salmon ceviche were all very good. The service was friendly, although the waiters spoke mostly spanish and seemed a bit new to the job. We were planning to have a leisurely dinner, but our appetizers came instantly and the waiter kept coming back to see if we were done. One hostess, however, was fabulous. She clearly was alerted by our waiter that we were eating slowly, and came to our table to tell us that she would instruct the kitchen to slow things down, and asked us how long we wanted to wait until our main courses were served. We told her, and that is exactly what happened. Very nicely done.

“Great food”

The food was great, but nothing special. The service was very good! The place is charming and makes you feel like you are in Cuba. I would recommend this.

“Free sangria with brunch!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 21, 2014

Go there for brunch and it comes with free sangria. Seriously how can anyone go wrong with that? I love the little cheesy bread they give you. It's So good. I love brunch there, no matter what you order you can't go wrong. Just get there early enough so you don't have to wait long. Or get there late enough where you've missed the huge crowd. Don't get too drunk at brunch or everyone at the table will be cut off. Keep it class people.

“Excellent every time I go back”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 5, 2014

Have been there three times for a private event and dinners in a span of a couple of months, although I have yet to try their famous weekend brunches, which are always packed (make sure you have a reservation!). The food is consistently delicious and beautifully presented. PLEASE try the "Dulce" appetizer - best thing ever!!! Cocktails are also consistently great - try the mojitos. Service is also very friendly and loved the ambiance as well, with lively (but not loud) latin american music. Great for a good long chat over dinner.
For those looking for a private event, this is a hidden gem. The place has a private room in the back to host 30-80 people for a sit-down dinner. Beautifully decorated, food was unbelievable, and drinks kept getting refilled almost magically! Loved it!

“Best brunch in NYC”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 23, 2014

Weekend brunch is kind of a big deal in NYC and Calle Ocho is by far my favorite place to... uh... practice. I could rave about all the free assortment of muffins and rolls that comes at the beginning of your meal or the number of delicious entrees I've tried (the vegetariano is a personal favorite), but the most important thing to note is the Unllimited. Free. Sangria. Seriously. FOR REAL. 8 different flavors (yes, I've tried them all and yes, they are delicious). Enough said.
