The restaurant is justly famous for its unique and beautiful decor, great location, excellent professional service and traditional but not too dated menu. This visit the quality of the food did not quite match previous experiences, perhaps because it was a summer weekend when most of the regular clientele is out of town, so the "B" team was in the kitchen. Still, we will go back because it is such a New York institution that it always makes for an enjoyable evening.

“Great choice for a special occasion”
Reviewed July 1, 2014

I had Sunday brunch with a party of 9 at the Garden Restaurant. Although making reservations from out of town required a credit card to hold such a large table, the trouble was well worth it. The wait staff was friendly and efficient. I had the salmon Benedict, which was very good and there were plenty of choices for everyone. We were all served at the same time and were able to enjoy our brunch in the relatively quiet atmosphere of the Four Seasons.

“Disappointing For A Special Occasion”
Reviewed July 1, 2014

I decided to splurge for my wife's birthday on June 30th and succeeded in spending over $500 for a meal no better than in scores of restaurants half the price. But the pool room is spectacular and we had requested Table 14 (which I recommend for the view) and if the food was not exemplary it was still consistently fine. The trouble this time was that the service was perfunctory. Water glasses weren't refilled, orders were forgotten. Requests for advice about wine were answered mono-sylabbically (then returning saying they didn't have that wine and producing another (quite mediocre) bottle as if it were the one he recommended at first). What I am trying to convey is that nothing about the occasion the slightest bit special. I guess they are used to very rich people on expense accounts and it doesn't cross their mind that spending $250 a person for a dinner is a lot for the average person. At the end I took a risk - which I regret. The waiter finally spoke - he said "Did you enjoy your dinner?" I said "Well to be honest the service could have been a little better." He replied with a curse and walked away leaving me stunned. On an entirely different note I had visited the restaurant a while back (using a discount Gilt coupon) and got service from a guy named Steve that was memorable and was the reason we returned. So I guess it is the luck of the draw. Maybe you should ask for Steve and table 11, 12, 13, or 14.

“Outstanding Business Lunch”
Reviewed June 21, 2014 via mobile

We had a great lunch at the Four Seasons. The food and the service were outstanding. The room is also impressive with its high ceilings. Asparagus soup, white asparagus, crispy oysters, crab cakes, and Dover sole were all amazing. The meal was relaxed and well paced. We never felt rushed or left waiting. This is not an inexpensive restaurant, but not a bad deal given the quality of the experience.

“Four Seasons Restaurant Outstanding.”
Reviewed June 5, 2014

Ratings of many restaurants these days seems to rest on the opinions of so-called "Foodies." Their criteria for rating are not always clearly stated and some reviews seem to be based on the mood the reviewer was in when dining or whether the grilled octopus was too shiny or adequately undercooked. Many reviews seem to provide more information about the reviewer than about the restaurant. Despite the lack of fanfares and flourishes I chose to eat at the Four Seasons and enjoyed an excellently prepared yellowfin tuna, very good wine by the glass and first rate service.
The ambiance of the Pool Room was very pleasant.
