Despite the name, this is not a typical pizzeria. Rather it is a very large sports bar type restaurant (the bar is a centerpiece attraction) that focuses on pizza, though other dishes are available.

Ironically, despite being located in the heart of Manhattan, this place does not serve what is commonly known as New York style pizza. Instead it serves brick oven style pizza, which is totally different, though still tasty. However you can buy only whole pies; the waitstaff each wear shirts that say "no slices on the back."

The pizza we ordered was good, as was the cheese ravioli, though nothing remarkable. This is right by the theatre district, so it is a convenient place to eat before a show, and on a theatre night it starts filling up by 6pm. However, this is not a place that I would go to for a leisurely dinner or if I wanted a really good Italian meal.

This is a sit down restaurant that you'll enjoy if you like that kind of thing for Pizza. Fresh, hot, lots of topping suggestions and whole wheat crust if you request it. A bit pricier than fast food pizza, but it also tastes a lot better. We went for lunch on a weekday and had to wait a few minutes for a table. Also, be prepared to wait for the pizza to cook (15-20 minutes) as everything is made to order, as it should be. Service was also good.

I have been to John's several times while in New York City and it never disappoints. The restaurant is located in a former church so the atmosphere is amazing. The staff is very efficient and if you need a pre-theater meal this is a good stop as it is very close to Theater District. They don't take reservations but if you get there by 5:30 you can usually be seated quickly. The last time there was a huge school group that came in on several buses so the wait was 45 minutes even though we got there early, but they have a very efficient queing system so we just hung out at the bar. The atmosphere is lively so we didn't mind. The salads are fresh and the Pizza is classic New York. You won't be disappointed!

My wife and I had the pleasure of dinning at John’s Pizzeria this past weekend and the food was delicious. The pizza was the best we had eaten since leaving New York 12 years ago. The spaghetti with bolognaise sauce was equally as impressive, as well as the house salad. The house salad with vinaigrette dressing was filled with all of the usually ingredients and was large enough to feed a small family of four on its own. The atmosphere was inviting and the staff was very friendly and efficient. My wife and I will return to John’s during our next visit in 2014 or sooner. That pizza was really good!

The location in an old church is unique and makes for a fun atmosphere. I had several kinds of pizza, the cheesy calzone which was my favorite and finished the meal with tiramisu. An enjoyable dining experience.
