Description: The last of its kind near 42nd Street, Chez Josephine is a neighborhood gem founded in 1986 by Jean-Claude Baker as a tribute to legendary Josephine Baker. This Parisian bistro offers live piano music and a tantalizing menu in an intimate setting of red velvet walls, a cavalcade of chandeliers and a blue-tin ceiling. Guests receive a warm welcoming and are treated as family whether coming before a show, after the show, for a leisurely dinner in-between, or a drink at the zinc bar.

Very good dishes for a fair price, around 50 dollars per person. Order for the filet poivre vert, it's better than lobster ou shrimp. The piano player is great too.

Just in NY for one night on business. Enjoyed a wonderful evening at Chez Josephine with my friend and co-worker. Sat outside and had a wonderful evening with great food, good wine and excellent service!!! I will be back

I had great hopes for this place. I had just seen a new musical about Ms Baker, and heard about yet another musical being produced and a book, too. So, I went on-line and saw that her eldest son had this place. I was intrigues by the menu offering fried chicken and sweet-potato fries... maybe not so healthy for me, but I was salivating. So I made a reservation for myself and a friend and popped in on a Sunday... only to find that the Sunday menu doesn't include those items. What made it doubly disappointing is that what was on offer was nothing special (except perhaps for the escargot). I could just as well been at Restaurant X. The atmosphere is colourful, with paintings of Josephine all around, and there's a piano player playing recognisable muzak. Service was friendly. I'd suggest this place for a casual Sunday brunch, nothing special, or perhaps before the theatre.

We cannot provide enough superlatives for Chez Josephine. From Jean-Claude Baker's warm and friendly greeting upon entering, through excellent, attentive service by the waitstaff, to the live piano music that complements all else that is the essence of visiting Chez Josephine. Always recommend to friends as the beginning of a wonderful NY Theater Evening.

We had dinner there at 5:30 with reservations prior to a theatre show. The meal was winderful and the owner met us at the door to welcome us. The service was great. The cheese puffs are fantastic. Do make sure that you make reservations though. We highly recommend.
