Description: The last of its kind near 42nd Street, Chez Josephine is a neighborhood gem founded in 1986 by Jean-Claude Baker as a tribute to legendary Josephine Baker. This Parisian bistro offers live piano music and a tantalizing menu in an intimate setting of red velvet walls, a cavalcade of chandeliers and a blue-tin ceiling. Guests receive a warm welcoming and are treated as family whether coming before a show, after the show, for a leisurely dinner in-between, or a drink at the zinc bar.

We always return to Chez Josephine when we visit New York. After living in the City and eating in lots of restaurants, we so value the service, music, romance. I love the food. Always a less expensive as well as more expensive wine is recommended. And the Johnny Mercer, Cole Porter tunes from the piano... Bliss.

We were really looking forward to our dinner at this restaurant as the reviews were all great. The location is perfect and the restaurant is super cute. We had really bad service. It took the waiter over 25 minutes to come to our table and take our intial order and then we waited over an hour for our food. I'm not sure what happened as everyone around us had their meal, but no one apologized or even ackowledged that we waited so long. The food was OK, definitely overpriced and not as good as the other restaurants we visited while in NYC.

An attractive, romantic setting at Chez Josephine, piano music playing in the background on a busy Friday night, warm welcome, good service. I would happily go there again but for the unexciting food, alas. My Beef Wellington was coated in very soggy pastry and tasted more like pot roast than tenderloin, although a slice of foie gras atop helped. Another guest's crisped oysters had a less-than-crispy coating--nothing delicate about it. Alas, an uptick in food quality would make this place wonderful.

not only will you meet the son (owner) of the legendary Josephine Baker who is there most nights, but the food is incredible...from basic (spaghetti..one of Josephine's faves) to sophisticated (escargot) and reasonably priced. They'll get you out in time for theatre by asking what show you are going to see. i go every time i am in NYC...

We met some friends here on a Sunday after they'd gone to the theater (we live in the area but hadn't been here in over a decade); it happened to also be restaurant week. Five of us ordered from the rest.week menu, one a la carte. Everyone had an excellent meal - the outstanding dish, my friend's a la carte order, was the duck breast. It was quite an ample portion, and the duck was cooked exactly right; tender, neither over- nor undercooked.
Service was excellent; the live music in the background was just that - loud enough to be appreciated, but soft enough for our conversation to be easily held.
Not inexpensive, but worth the occasional splurge. We'll be back more often!
