“Good-bye Grand old Essex House”
Reviewed October 11, 2013

I was so looking forward to a return stay at the Essex House. Upon entering the lobby, I was pleased to see that it was still a grand old gal. All changed when the doors opened to the floor of our first room. Only one word can describe...TACKY. What happened? Did someone hire Leona Helmsley to decorate? Ugh. On to the room. Ugly, mishmash of ill fitting built in furniture. Our room had issues, so I went to the desk for another room. The second room was just as hideous, but better than the first. As others have described, the restrooms are awkward and water goes everywhere because of ill fitting shower curtains. The place is a mess. BTW, this is in a suite...goodness help folks in regular rooms. There are MANY better hotels, and for the price you can stay anywhere in NYC and be happy.

This was such a grand hotel "once upon a time" and on the surface still appears that way upon entering. The actual room was tired and in need of a makeover. The lighting was complicated to operate and did not offer much illumination. The worst feature was the positioning of the faucet handles on the bathroom sink. They were right along the rim of the counter and poked you in the chest when leaning over to brush teeth, etc. Very strange. The bed and pillows were comfortable but I doubt I would return here.

We stayed at the JW Marriott Essex House New York in September. We were looking forward to our stay across from Central Park. Our excitement turned to disappointment rapidly. We had booked well in advance asking for an upper floor with a view. Upon arrival we were told we would be given the best they had but that they were very crowded. We were on the 9th floor with absolutely no view except for an office building blocking our windows. Approximately 30 minutes after checking in there was a knock on our door. When asked who it was, they said "security". When I asked what they wanted I was told they needed to stand in the room for a minute to check wifi. I told them we didn't need wifi and they left. When I questioned the front desk about this, they didn't seem to know anything about it and said they would look into it. We never heard back from them.
The bathroom tub had a shower curtain rod which protruded way out of the tub and a short shower curtain so needless to say all the water sprayed out of the tub each time the shower was used. We've stayed at many Marriotts and loved them, but we won't go back here.

This hotel was upscale and great, but surprisingly the carpet was really stained. Got free upgrade to a suite, so was very happy about that! Despite the carpet--really nice hotel. The location is directly across the street from Central Park!

In choosing a base of operations for our family vacation to New York City in July, we had a choice to make: stay in/near the chaos and excitement of Times Square or opt for a little more tranquility. We chose the latter with the JW Marriott Essex House, located squarely on the middle of Central Park South between 6th and 7th Aves. After our first night in the city we were glad we did. Times Square was exciting, but at bedtime we were glad we could look down 7th Ave from near our hotel and view it at a distance. As for the hotel, it's a classic old gem. We got two rooms on the 4th floor, right off the elevators. We asked for connecting rooms and got them, sort of: Our rooms (one king, one double) were connected by their own tiny entrance hall. We were able to close the outer door and have the privacy to go between the two rooms. It was also cool to open the outer door to our "apartment" each morning and grab the NY Times off the front step, just like a local! Our rooms didn't have a view of anything but a large airshaft, not that we were surprised since we were using Marriott Rewards points for both rooms. I figure you have to pay for the view, which is understandable. Actually, the folks at the hotel were exceptionally accommodating, giving us a double when Marriott.com showed we could only get two kings and making sure our rooms connected. Beds were comfortable, baths were nice and modern (though I'm not a fan of these raised basin-type sinks) and the unusual push button light switches are not as difficult to master as some have written. Our 8-year-old figured it out in about 12 minutes. If you have a large party and are willing to pay a bit of a price, rent a car just for the drive in and out of Manhattan. We got a Suburban for all six of us and our mountain of luggage and were glad we did. The day we arrived I paid the fee to pick up the car at Newark airport and drop it off about four blocks from the hotel. When we left I took the train out to Newark Airport and returned about an hour later with the car. As for transportation, the Essex House location is great for another reason. The hotel is just over a block away from subway stations at Columbus Circle (A,B,C,D and 1 lines), 57th and 7th Ave (N,Q,R lines), 5th Ave and 59th St (N,Q,R) and 57th Street (F line at 6th Ave). You can get just about anywhere you want to go from one of those lines. Taxis are plentiful of the yellow cab and bicycle variety (you have to try one of those), and the horse-drawn carriages line up directly across from the hotel ready to whisk you on a romantic jaunt through Central Park. Again, I have to stress the pleasure being on Central Park, allowing you to get away just a little bit from the relentless hustle and bustle of the rest of the city. If you can afford it (or save up your MR points like us) I highly recommend the JW Marriott Essex House.

Room Tip: If you need connecting rooms, ask for ones with an outer entrance hall. The rooms won't connect...

Currently staying on 5th floor, so disappointed especially since I've stayed in JW Marriott around the country and I'm a platinum elite member. There is no coffee pot in the room. When I inquired was told there was a $ 25 charge for a coffee pot in the room. Really???? Even La Quinta hotels give coffee pots. Their response was to go to the concierge lounge ( which was closed) Or order room service coffee. We're in a one-bedroom suite and only 1 outlet works. This means the bedroom television doesn't work and there are wires hanging from it. Can't help but think we are an inconvenience to the staff. This is extremely upsetting given my loyalty to the corporation and the price of the stay.

We used Marriott points to stay at the JW Marriott Essex House. It required a high number of points to stay the week but we felt the value was worth it. We had a room on the third floor for the first four nights. We did hear some traffic noise but it wasn't terrible. At our request, we moved higher for the last three nights. Both rooms overlooked Central Park.
The rooms are a good size by NYC standards and are appointed well and in good shape. The elevators are fast and you don't find yourself waiting very long. As others have noted, the lobby is very attractive.
As lifetime gold Marriott we had access to the concierge lounge. We had breakfast there every morning and I highly recommend it. There are a variety of fresh fruits, scrambled eggs, breakfast meats, etc. In addition, they offer two kinds of smoked salmon and excellent lattes you make with a great machine. They also have an excellent pastry chef who makes wonderful chocolate and almond croissants and other assorted breakfast breads. The service is also wonderful.
I also want to mention the excellent concierge staff who are very knowledgeable about everything to do in NYC.
The location is wonderful being on the south end of Central Park.

Room Tip: Request a room higher up in the hotel since there are 34 floors.
