I travelled here with my wife, my friend and his wife for a short break Thursday to Monday. The Hotel was in a fantastic location overlooking central park, the room was well furnished and excellent facilities and an extremely comfortable bed. I found the staff to be very helpful and polite and the concierge was very helpful and always available to give advice, he also organsised a private hotel car for us one night when we went to see Jersey Boys on Broadway. The bar was very nice for pre-evening drinks. We tried to walk as often as we could as New York is wall to wall sight-seeing. lots of places to eat nearby ranging from fine dining to outstaning Diners for the must have new york breakfast. Great trip, great hotel, would go back in a heartbeat!

My younger sister just had her wedding in New York at the Boat House and we chose the Essex House as the hotel for our guests, the bridal party and for the bridal suite. The location is great, central and right on the park, but those are the only positive things I can say about the experience. We had one nice manager who helped us tremendously but otherwise the front desk, room service and overall service could not have been more rude - especially considering it was my sister's big day. The elevators are slow and there are few of them, the check in process is also slow with never more than 2 or 3 people checking in at the front desk, and the a/c in the rooms didn't work. Worst of all, there was a scaffolding put in front of most of the central park view rooms and we were not told about it until just a few days before the wedding - we got moved to a smaller room without a scaffolding view and the entire bridal party was crammed in there. Yes, they discounted our rate but it still was an unwelcome surprise before the wedding. Overall, I've stayed at many other nicer places in New York for this price, and would certainly not consider having a special event at this location.

Room Tip: If you are booking right now be aware that the central park view rooms have scaffolding and nets in...

The Essex House has a lot going for but if you are used to five star hotels like The Ritz or The Peninsula you may have an issue with the rooms and decor. Of course pricewise the Essex House is nowhere near as expensive...so in that way it may be considered quite a a good value.

In terms of our experience, we were upgraded to a MUCH larger suite than we had originally booked since we had to wait so long for our room--which was really quite generous of the staff. The upgrade also had a view of the park but it was obscured by scaffolding. We didn't pay for the view so we didn't mind, but had we paid full price we would have demanded to be moved.

The housekeeping staff was a little less than ideal and you got the sense that they may be a tad overworked and weren't as gracious as one might have expected (with a couple of exceptions). I got scolded one night when the housekeeper said "I asked you earlier if you wanted me to make up the sofa bed and now you are calling me." She seemed annoyed.
We also had come to the Essex House straight from the Trump Soho where we were treated like royalty,. It was a tough act to follow.

We were lucky in that they were testing their all day room service menu which we used often and were never disappointed. The food was great and service was fast.

Now getting to the real problem at the Essex House. If you are used to 5 star hotel rooms, these rooms are shabby. Old carpet, old couches that look dirty, ratty looking cabinetry in the bathroom, and plumbing that does not always work right. I had to resort to pulling the tank top off the toilet a few times to fix the device that stops the toilet from running. Not exactly what I was looking forward to.

The positives include

Staff that goes over and above to help. From the front desk ladies like Jennifer who was a sweetheart and Cassandra who made us feel very welcome to the valet Johnny who helped us get cabs when it seemed an impossible task.

Lots of space in the suites.

Great location.

Grand lobby.

Great food.

Negative:

Rooms need to be renovated and furnishings totally redone if you are wanting a five star experience.. A great interior decorator would be nice.

If the rooms were redone and maybe some of the housekeeping staff replaced we would be talking 5 stars. The hotel lobby is grand and the restaurant is also quite lovely. I did have the best omelet I have ever had there one morning.

I am hoping that the Marriott will put the $$$ into redoing the rooms and bringing the hotel up to the level that it deserves. It is a lovely and historic building with a fantastic location.

Hope this helps.....

The best thing about this hotel is just the ease of the hotel. It is close to everything and it never feels hectic, too busy or too loud. The lobby isn't some enormous cavern you have to navigate. It is a very simple affair getting in and out. The rooms are also very nice. They have warm colors throughout and nice carpet, which makes it feel very warm and comfortable and they are of great size for a NYC hotel. I really felt comfortable and relaxed throughout my stay. Ironically, this is great hotel is you have little kids as well; it is right across form the one of the main entrances to the park, there is nearby mall, and in only a couple blocks away from the FAO toy store. The only slightly bad things I can say is that it doesn't have a pool and it is a little pricier than some other equally nice hotels, but again you are paying for that less hectic, low-key feel and for being so near the park.

Room Tip: If you care about your view, you will want to upgrade to a room on the north side. The rooms on the...

The Essex House has a great location. I visited with my wife and two teenage sons this summer. We had a wonderful time crossing the street any time of the day to take strolls in Central Park. There are terrific dining options in the Columbus Circle and Lincoln Center areas, and you're close enough to Times Square and the theatres if you're looking for greater evening entertainment options. Having said this, do not make the mistake of assuming you'll have a view of Central Park just because the hotel is on Central Park South. In fact, do not even assume you'll have a nice view unless you specifically agree to pay extra for a view of the park. We were told by the Marriott reservation agent that our room would have a "courtyard" view, which was fine with us because we wanted a room with two beds (all such rooms have that view) and we were staying for only three nights and did not plan to spend much time in the room. However, our fourth-floor room looked out over a roof (part of the hotel's property) full of what appeared to be construction litter - paint cans, a ladder, plastic bags and other trash. I found it offensive that the hotel's management did not seem to care that their guests - at least the ones who had not paid extra for the more expensive Central Park view - would see trash when they looked out the window. Also, our room's and the hotel's (eg, hallways) overall cleanliness was average. There is only one restaurant. We only had breakfast there. It was pricey but good.

We got an excellent deal on a 1 bdr suite at Essex House for my family of 4. The room exceeded our expectations, it was huge, with a seperate bedroom, a walk in wardrobe, full bath etc. Whilst we had no views, we had lots of windows so the room felt light and airy. We had thought the rooms might be run down and in need of renovation, but this was not the case.
On the downside, the hotel is very large so not very personal, the wifi is shocking (but free), the breakfast restaurant had a 30 minute wait each morning so we went elsewhere, and there are no free bicycles available as advertised in the rooms! room service food was pretty average and quite expensive.

Room Tip: there alots of didderent rom options available, so talk them through with the hotel.

We couldn't ask for a better experience. We were traveling with three children so their larger suite was perfect. Great location, very clean rooms, friendly service. This was our kids first trip to NYC so we wanted a to be near many of the popular sites as well as relax near the park. This is the perfect location for a family visiting NYC. Thanks JW, we'll be back again.
