“Great Location and View”
Reviewed March 4, 2013

Grand lobby, friendly friendly staff. As a platinum member of Marriott Rewards my upgrade was to what I would call a large apartment, two baths, living room and great master bedroom. We were able to have friends visit for drinks and snacks before we walked 2 blocks to our restaurant. Just be wary of the per diem parking. If you check in at 2pm and get your car the next day at 3 you will be charged a full 24 hours again (ouch). But overall I completely enjoyed our stay and plan to make this my NYC hotel.

Showed up at hotel in a taxi with luggage and a large service animal... I had to struggle with two doorways to enter. Not one individual was at curbside or at the entrance to assist me. No handicap door opener either. For me it was a fight but a person in a wheel chair wouldn't be able to enter without assistance. Not a good start for just trying to enter the hotel. I noticed upon other times curb side help and door men were around. But other times not a soul. Inside the staff is friendly. The restaurant was closed so it was either room service or going out.. Room is nice but bathroom needs work. Dirty exhaust vent old tile in shower and floor dis coloring. Probably from the last hotel before Marriott took over. But for the price on Central Park South great price compared to the other hotels around the park

Grand hotel lobby, very attentive desk and bellhop service and room is nicely appointed, (although small) and spa style bath is inviting. We stayed here for an event in their dining/conference room which was similar to the grand ballrooms of the Newport Mansions in Newport, R.I. The hors d'oeuvres and filet mignon were terrific. Mandatory valet parking service is speedy. If you want to feel like a member of the 1%, just walk around the lobby where expensive stores line along the glistening marble floors, and enormous fresh flower bouquets sit on beautiful side tables.

However, since this is a newly acquired hotel by the Marriott Corp. this past Fall, they have yet to switch over the older mattress sets to their 'Marriott Beds' that are hyped and can be purchased through their Marriott bed buying site. This was a big disappointment since I purposefully stayed there in order to double check their mattress set before I ordered - as recommended. Having had several spine surgeries and found the Aruba Marriott Resort/Stellaris concierge level beds to be the only mattress that gave me some relief, our stay at the Essex House was planned to confirm that this was the bed for me.

However, I had THE worst night and the mattress was terrible. Checking at the concierge desk before I left, confirmed that the mattress sets were not the Jamison Bedding sets I expected for the Marriott Bed and that the Marriott Bedding will not be in the rooms until Spring 2015 when the renovations will be complete. I felt so defeated, especially after all the promotion on the Marriott Buy site.

Room Tip: asking for a Central Park view will cost you, so judge how much time you'll actually spend in th...

My wife and I just finished a 3 night stay at the JW Marriott Essex House and could not have been happier with the hotel.

I loved the historic aspects of this 1930’s Art Deco hotel. The lobby was elegant, and I really liked the art deco doors and crystal chandeliers. You can’t beat the location. It’s a ten minute walk to Lincoln Center, the Theater District, Times Square, Fifth Avenue, and Central Park it right outside the front door. There are a multitude of places literally around the corner to eat and shop.

We had a wonderful corner suite that included an entrance foyer, sitting area with sofa and chair, and a large walkthrough closet that led to a well-equipped bathroom. The bathroom included a soaking tub, stall shower, and very thick bath towels. The room had good natural lighting, nice furnishings, a very comfortable bed, high quality linens, and a desk overlooking the Manhattan skyline. It was the perfect place to spend a long weekend in New York.

There is a nice fitness center that also has separate men’s and women’s locker rooms with Steam Rooms, Saunas, and showers.

Service was friendly and efficient. One morning I had to leave early to run an errand, and I put the “service room” light on. When I returned about an hour later, the room was already made up.

All in all we had a great stay at the JW Marriott Essex House and will stay there on our next trip to New York City.

Great hotel, beautiful view of Central Park from 37th floor. Clean rooms, fast room service, good food, great drinks at the bar. Location is very convinient - across Central Park. Staff is very attentive.
Bed was very comfortable with top quality linens, soft down pillows.

Room Tip: Higher floor with Central Park view - worth every penny.
