“Great chicken in Harlem”
Reviewed October 11, 2013 via mobile

Frist trip to Harlem, and we found what we were looking for Sylvia's. We got a little lost on the way and had a lovely lady help us who new Sylvia back in the day.
The corn bread was great, the fried chicken a treat, the ribs were good but I love the ribs at the flying pig in London and these were not quite up there.
If you are in New York take a trip to see Harlem and try Sylvia's.

“Over rated!”
Reviewed October 10, 2013 via mobile

We went there because it was featured on Man vs Food. We ordered the same meal as on the show, the fried chicken. To be honest, it was good, but nothing to brag about, seriously. I don't know what it was like few years back when it was featured on the show, but if it was better then it clearly dropped the ball since. That's probably what happens to places once they get a reputation, they don't need to try as hard. Or maybe we had higher expectations because of the show, I'm not sure. It was pricey for what it was.

The service was pleasant. They also do gospel singing there each Sunday.

The toilets were filthy, didn't see the kitchen but I hate seeing filthy toilets in a restaurant, doesn't give a good impression at all.

“Tourist-heavy, but a fun experience”
Reviewed October 10, 2013

Definitely go to Sylvia's on off-hours (or make a reservation, if they accept them!), but it's worth the trip for the experience, this history, and the soul-food. Also, despite what you may have heard, Harlem is beautiful, and this part of the neighborhood is very safe and full of history. Enjoy!

“Easy to find in Harlem”

Went for the BBQ and sweet potato pie and loved every bite! Sad to see that Sylvia had passed away last year, but what a legacy she left with her family.

“The fried chicken is simply out of this world!”
Reviewed October 5, 2013

We came here for a breakfast one morning and really enjoyed what we had and what we saw. The hash was great!

Then on my last day in New York, just before heading to the airport I made a beeline for this place to get something to eat for a late lunch! I ordered chicken, which was amazing! For such a large piece of chicken the fact that it was still moist and succulent was greatly appreciated.

However, while the chicken was fantastic it was the garlic mash the sealed the deal! It was simply some of the best mashed potato Ive ever had in my life! :)

Additionally, the corn bread was off the scale! Still warm, moist and great tasting with butter!

This was a great meal and I loved watching the locals coming and going and how they interacted with the staff. Quite clearly the staff knew everyone who came in and greated them almost as if they were the most important people in their lives. The welcoming each customer got was heart warming :)

Great place to come and eat, no two ways about it!!!
