I love La Palapa and have eaten there many dozens of times over the years. Fortunately, the rest of my family agrees that it's our favorite place to eat out.
The food immediately transcends generic Mexican dishes: the fresh salsas, the rice and beans--the basics--are superb. The simple street food like tacos and quesadillas are perfectly executed with details like house-pickled onions and excellent tortillas. The dishes you might find at lots of places, like enchiladas with salsa verde or mole, are so beautifully prepared you will no longer stand for the customary good-enough versions found around the corner. And the special dishes turned out by the kitchen, the ones you might find only at the best Mexico City restaurants or in some regional home kitchens, are so fresh and inventive you will congratulate yourself for paying La Palapa's reasonable prices rather than going to one of those fancy "artisanal" locavore places that charge a 50% premium for the right to be au courant. The owner of La Palapa travels frequently to Mexico in search of recipes and ingredients so the nightly specials are sometimes surprising and worth the adventure.
The bar serves great cocktails; usually there are several nightly specials that augment the usual menu of fresh fruit and premium liquor-based drinks.
Kids are welcome and accomodated. The kids menu is very reasonably priced and with any luck your kids will use those dishes, like tacos and quesadillas, as stepping stones to a more varied palate of Mexican cuisine.
