Well I can't make comparisions with other deli's BUT Katz is already famous for its Hot Pastrami sandwiches and it certainly met our expectations when we visited recently. The room was heaving at around 3pm in the afternoon with a massive line of diners waiting inside.......BUT don't be deceived by this, in fact they were just waiting to pay before leaving!

Katz opperates a unusual ticketing arrangement. Everyone entering the restaurant is given a numbered ticket which you have to hand in on leaving even if you don't buy anything. If you don't have your ticket to hand in on departure they fine you # $'s. When you get your food either from the take away counter or from the served tables they write your total bill on the ticket and you present this at the checkout for payment.

Service is very swift however you choose to eat.

We were quickly seated at one of the serviced tables (you may have to share with others) and was immediatly brought iced water and a bowl of pickles. You simply have to order a Hot Pastrami sandwich! When it arrives you get about 2" of hot Pastrami between two slices of bread and I'm afraid you just have cope with most of the meat falling on the plate.......ready to be packed in a take out box for later!

If you are not super hungry order one sandwich to share maybe with some fries on the side.

A brilliant palce to eat if you are visiting the Lower East Side. Which you must do to go to the Tenament Museum!!!

I have been eating at Katz’s deli for years it’s a New York institution.
The food is excellent always fresh! It has to be since it is always filled with customers. They handle the crowd and lines well. Waiter service is also an option.
I have also used their catering services and they were wonderful. I highly recommend Katz’s if you enjoy fresh deli.

Went to Katz's. At first it was confusing you walk through the door and they through a ticket at you. There is no direction telling you table service is on the left if you want it. We did not know so we went in line and ordered our meal. We also ordered Potato pancakes. The staff is burly but the food is great. Really enjoyed eating there. They have the smallest bathroom I ever sat in. There are pictures of celebrities over the walls which are interesting. Would definitely return to this restaurant.

A visit to Katz's deli was one of the reasons we chose NY as a holiday destination, and we weren't disappointed - it was pretty much as we'd hoped for. Once finding your way through the throng of people to a server, they will give you a little taster of the meat (which was amazing, completely melt-in-your-mouth) and then create the huge sandwiches - I had brisket, my wife had corned beef. They also gave us a plate of the pickles, which were very sour! Then there is another queue for drinks and sides. Everything you order is marked on your ticket that you are given on the way in and you pay on the way out - quicker and more efficient way of getting people their food. Then there is the scramble to find a table, although there are more tables out of immediate view at the back.

The sandwiches were amazing, the mustard that goes with them was awesome (even my wife who is not so much of a mustard fan loved it!) and the place is full of the pictures of famous people who had dropped by (and, of course, the sign above the table where Meg Ryan sat in When Harry Met Sally). The only downside is that it is a bit on the expensive side - $40 for 2 sandwiches and 2 cans of drink, even if they were very large sandwiches - my wife had them wrap half of hers to take home!

If you come to New York, it is a must visit!

For those who like traditional Jewish deli (those who eat their sandwiches on rye bread without mayonnaise, lettuce and tomato) this is the holy grail. They will cut the meat the way you like it and it is always yummy
