Well I can't make comparisions with other deli's BUT Katz is already famous for its Hot Pastrami sandwiches and it certainly met our expectations when we visited recently. The room was heaving at around 3pm in the afternoon with a massive line of diners waiting inside.......BUT don't be deceived by this, in fact they were just waiting to pay before leaving!
Katz opperates a unusual ticketing arrangement. Everyone entering the restaurant is given a numbered ticket which you have to hand in on leaving even if you don't buy anything. If you don't have your ticket to hand in on departure they fine you # $'s. When you get your food either from the take away counter or from the served tables they write your total bill on the ticket and you present this at the checkout for payment.
Service is very swift however you choose to eat.
We were quickly seated at one of the serviced tables (you may have to share with others) and was immediatly brought iced water and a bowl of pickles. You simply have to order a Hot Pastrami sandwich! When it arrives you get about 2" of hot Pastrami between two slices of bread and I'm afraid you just have cope with most of the meat falling on the plate.......ready to be packed in a take out box for later!
If you are not super hungry order one sandwich to share maybe with some fries on the side.
A brilliant palce to eat if you are visiting the Lower East Side. Which you must do to go to the Tenament Museum!!!
