“Wow, very impressed”
Reviewed November 29, 2013

I came across this restaurant searching for good gnocchi in Manhattan. The atmosphere is really warm and inviting. There is a large fireplace that adds a relaxing element. Settle in for a real treat. Started with a bottle of champagne that was reasonably priced. They serve some really good bread with butter and spaghetti sauce for dipping. For starters, we had a couple of Pera Con Prosciutto salads and a Funghi Con Polenta. Both were excellent but the Pera Con Prosciutto was a knockout with sweet and salt in perfect balance. The walnuts provided a once change of texture and the pear cleansed the palate. The polenta was perfect and creamy. The mushrooms were a little salty for my taste. The second course consisted of a couple of Pesce Arrosto (branzino) and Veal Bolognese. Again, both were good. The branzino had a few bones but tender and stuffed with rosemary, lemon and thyme. I've had better branzino with more char on the outside. Since it is prepared over the flames, that is easy to accomplish. However, the inside was cooked to flaky perfection. The Veal was also good, albeit rich. We ordered a half serving of the Gnocchi Con Ragu Di Carne and all thought it was excellent. When you deconstruct the dish, the kernel is delicate gnocchi offset by the rich beef and sauce. Dessert is a must have at Apizz. We saw a few being delivered to other tables and they were large. Two people can share one easily. The table split the Tortino Al Cioccolato and the Mela Al Forno. The Tortino was perhaps the best flourless chocolate cake we've sampled. A perfect balance of bitter and sweet and the vanilla gelato sets it off beautifully. The Melo is huge and tastes like a French Apple pie. Again, it is topped with the vanilla gelato and is excellent. A round of coffee was the perfect counterpoint. The waitstaff is excellent. Water never was empty and dishes removed promptly. However, the pace was relaxed and we never felt rushed. The waitstaff simply did their work in an unobtrusive and effective way. You really don't notice them much but you do notice you never need to ask for anything. Very impressive. If you want a great Italian meal in a cozy friendly atmosphere, this is the place. We'll be back!

“Just one room”
Reviewed October 20, 2013

With just one room for dining you must get a reservation in advance. Apizz is a small little gem serving great Italian food. The atmosphere is intimate and inviting. The cocktails are fun to start the evening. They also have a long wine list. The green salad was very fresh and served with just the right amount of dressing. The bread is very fresh too. We had two pasta dishes and both were delicious-- lasagna and ravioli with butternut squash and sage brown butter sauce. I would certainly return to Apizz on another trip to NYC.

Heard about it from a friend . Wasn't bad, sat at bar for dinner, bartender cool. But pizza was pretty avg for NYC . Really thin crust, more like a cracker. Pxes fine, room non descript. Salad fine...zzzzzzz

“Great find!”
Reviewed May 14, 2013

Went here based on internet reviews and Apizz lived up to their reputation! Web-based booking was very easy. I needed to add a person and wasn't able to do it on the web-- called and it was no problem.

Staff are extremely friendly and helpful in describing dishes-- providing info about what they liked and didn't like. Good drinks and wine list. Atmosphere very nice.

Most importantly, the food was fantastic! We had the meatball dinner as an app at the server's suggestion. That worked really well and was delicious! Everyone agreed that their meals were very good.

Great neighborhood restaurant where I would return in the future!

“Looks odd outside, but persevere!”
Reviewed April 17, 2013 via mobile

On a cold evening we trekked down to the Lower East Side to try what seemed like a quirky spot. It was worth it! The warm and lively interior immediately felt welcoming. We sat at a table beside the open kitchen and enjoyed watching the chefs pop crockery laden with great looking foods into and out of the wood-burning oven. We tried a pizza and salad to start and then meatballs and baked fish. All were flavorful, fresh, and very clean tasting. The kitchen doesn't make fussy things, rather simply delicious offerings. Dessert was great, too!
