I came across this restaurant searching for good gnocchi in Manhattan. The atmosphere is really warm and inviting. There is a large fireplace that adds a relaxing element. Settle in for a real treat. Started with a bottle of champagne that was reasonably priced. They serve some really good bread with butter and spaghetti sauce for dipping. For starters, we had a couple of Pera Con Prosciutto salads and a Funghi Con Polenta. Both were excellent but the Pera Con Prosciutto was a knockout with sweet and salt in perfect balance. The walnuts provided a once change of texture and the pear cleansed the palate. The polenta was perfect and creamy. The mushrooms were a little salty for my taste. The second course consisted of a couple of Pesce Arrosto (branzino) and Veal Bolognese. Again, both were good. The branzino had a few bones but tender and stuffed with rosemary, lemon and thyme. I've had better branzino with more char on the outside. Since it is prepared over the flames, that is easy to accomplish. However, the inside was cooked to flaky perfection. The Veal was also good, albeit rich. We ordered a half serving of the Gnocchi Con Ragu Di Carne and all thought it was excellent. When you deconstruct the dish, the kernel is delicate gnocchi offset by the rich beef and sauce. Dessert is a must have at Apizz. We saw a few being delivered to other tables and they were large. Two people can share one easily. The table split the Tortino Al Cioccolato and the Mela Al Forno. The Tortino was perhaps the best flourless chocolate cake we've sampled. A perfect balance of bitter and sweet and the vanilla gelato sets it off beautifully. The Melo is huge and tastes like a French Apple pie. Again, it is topped with the vanilla gelato and is excellent. A round of coffee was the perfect counterpoint. The waitstaff is excellent. Water never was empty and dishes removed promptly. However, the pace was relaxed and we never felt rushed. The waitstaff simply did their work in an unobtrusive and effective way. You really don't notice them much but you do notice you never need to ask for anything. Very impressive. If you want a great Italian meal in a cozy friendly atmosphere, this is the place. We'll be back!
