Description: Established in 1936, Monkey Bar was returned to its former glory in 2009 by Vanity Fair editor Graydon Carter. The dining room's lush red leather banquettes and dim, attractive lighting have restored the fizzy thrill of dining in a restaurant - both attractive and cozy - and harken back to a bygone era when a gentleman never left the house without a tie and a lady always had a pair of white gloves in her purse. Monkey Bar's menu boasts American classics alongside seasonal dishes using sustainable and organic products whenever possible.

The service was good, the food was very good and the vibe is classic old New York. However, $10 bottles of water, $12 beers (US brands), $22 burgers, $26 pasta etc, etc, - these are the mark-ups that make you feel that even if you can afford it, should you pay it? Went once, that is enough.

We loved the history of the Monkey Bar and the whimsical decor. The monkeys everywhere are adorable. You can easily imagine what it must have been like in the day. The bar was filled with bon vivants sipping delicious cocktails specially concocted for the holidays! The restaurant was glamorous and romantically lit making everyone look beautiful. Ed Sorel's mural is delightfully humorous. The servers were attentive at all times and we were delighted with each course served. We wanted to linger in the gorgeous red leather banquettes and wished the evening did not have to end. After coffee we went through the bar and they were having such a good time we decided it didn't have to end, ordered after dinner drinks and joined the party! A perfect evening out in New York.

Nice cozy place in midtown, excellent for a quick business lunch. Tried the lobster sandwich, it's very tasty. Can be very packed during lunch time and after work, better to make a reservation.

Good food: right in the hotel Elysee. Private entrance for hotel customers, through the lobby. Bistro ambiance. I would recomend for a one night dinner.

This is one of the few stunning old New York "supper club" restaurants. A sublime mix of red leather banquets, subdued monkey lights and the magnificent murals take you back to a time when one dressed to the nines for dinner and drank elegant cocktails. This was a restaurant week find for me....the service was perfect and unpretentious. The food was very good and worth the pre-fixe. The elegant cocktails and wine are obscenely overpriced as is the standard dinner menu. I am happy to splurge at certain "foodie" places such as Gramercy Tavern but this is not that level of quality. It's certainly worth a splurge for a special occasion or if your on expense account.
