Friends invited us to join them for dinner at a little place within walking distance of theirs. Wouldn't it be nice to have a place like this within walking distance of ours. You come for hearty French country food in a cramped, but welcoming space. Perfect for the cold evening it was - duck confit, coq au vin, liver. An excellent and reasonably priced bottle of red wine from Languedoc capped off a delightful evening. And for New York, the bill was an absolute bargain.

This is a local restaurant that is moderately priced with a flavor of Provence France
The menu is nicely balanced with meats and fish, I had the pork and duck and it was superb. The wine list is from the south of France and offers a nicely prices selection. I am a fan of Cotes du Rhone and I was very pleased with their selections. The service is very attentive and cordial; our waiter had been there for a long time and he was very helpful with wine and food recommendations.
I suggest that you make a reservation a few days in advance. The restaurant tends to fill up quickly, we had a very early Friday dinner planned and it was empty when we arrived and packed when we left.
I you are looking for a friendly place for a small gathering or just sitting down to enjoy a bottle of wine and some appetizer’s, I think you will be very pleased with La Mangeoire

What an attractive decor to make you forget you are in modern NYC. This French restaurant from inside looking out makes you feel like you are in a French Charles Dickinson novel. And not Scrooge. No pouting here, except maybe the pig whose cheeks I ate: Fondant de Joues de Porc aux Lentilles du Puy (Melting pork cheeks, green lentil & bacon stew).

I have eaten at this restaurant intermittently for over 30 years and it was a beloved restaurant by a relative who lived nearby. Unfortunately, my last experience was a bit of a service disappointment. I literally had to ask to get a cocktail/wine, and to order a meal after being seated at the table over 40 minutes. Despite the delay, at least the waiter was friendly and moderately attentive. Once things got rolling, the food was well, "French" and delightful. Also, one of the desserts was unavailable which was a bit of a surprise for a Saturday night! The service could be misconstrued as "continental" but that would be kind.
