We went to ckeck this restaurant based on reviews only, and we weren't disappointed!
The restaurant is small, it kind of feels like the living room of a family was converted into a restaurant.
The staff is very attentive, they suggested that we try a tasting menu, where you get to sample several small portions of traditional Indian dishes. I was a bit concerned since usually those tasting menus are huge and by the third dish you just feel you are not able to have a bite more. But not in this case, the size of every dish was just right!
Every dish was delicious, I honestly think that this is one of the best Indian restaurants that I have ever been.

Best service other than Gordon Ramsey's in London. The food was outstanding. They didn't have chicken korma on the menu but made it for us anyway. Garlic naan, mango chutney, basmati rice perfect. The staff was wonderful and respectful. I recommend Amma to anyone who loves Indian food or who has never had it. My mouth is watering.

We chose Amman based on their ranking as top Indian restaurant in NY. We were extremely disappointed with the experience. The menu was average, the decor was terrible for a restaurant that charges as much as they do. In my opinion, Tamarind is far superior and frankly, should be ranked as the top Indian restaurant in NY.

We had an appetizer, 2 entrees and a bottle of wine. $150 with tip (wine was $45).

What we liked: The food was good. Service was excellent.

What we didn't like:
1. Wine list was inaccurate. We picked a 2007 Russian River pinot noir from the list and they brought a 2010 bottle. No mention of the difference in year (fortuantely we caught the discrepancy). We're not that knowledgable about wines, but we know 2007 was a good year for this wine, and 2010 not as good. We then picked several others off the list which they also didn't have. The maitre d said it had something to do with it being near the end of the week (?).
2. Tables are too close together.
3. No waiting area, so when you walk in your standing right next to people eating dinner. The maitre d then walks to the back of the restaurant to check your reservation. Just felt a little awkward while you stood there.

We have eaten at a number of Indian restaurants over the years (we are both vegetarians and it naturally works for us). This is my favorite. Food is very creatively prepared and the dishes include some that I have never seen before. As an example, the entree that is made with potatoes, raisins and nuts, with a curry sauce was just wonderful. Their Rice Trio was also so creatively done! Highly recommend this place if you like Indian food.
