I visited a good friend in NYC who had already made a reservation at Avra. I had taken him to Marea and he wanted me to compare this dining experience with his new favorite. Don't mistake me. I love Marea. But I have to admit, for my taste, Avra is tops! Both restaurants focus on seafood, Marea from an Italian perspective and Avra with strong Grecian influences. There were three of us dining, and there wasn't a "miss" in any of our orders. For appetizers, we all agree the grilled octopus was the best we ever had, but the mussels in wine sauce were their equal. Both phenomenal. The Greek salad was also delicious.
Bring on the entrees! The swordfish which often comes to the table on the dry side, who moists and mouthwatering. I ordered the barbounia which was a lightly fried small fish from the Mediterranean. Wonderful! The New Zealand red snapper was prepared perfectly.
We shared two desserts to complete our meal. The have the Greek standards, but we shared a molten chocolate cake with fig ice cream and and a fruit tart prepared in filo. We rest our forks with smiles on our faces!
Service was impeccable and we enjoyed the simple decor and lusty ambience. You can't miss with Avra!
