“Loved this restaurant!”
Reviewed April 10, 2013

We chose this restaurant for its proximity to our hotel, on 57th st. It turned out to be a fortuitous choice! Despite the fact that it was fully and busy, the spacious design of the restaurant ( bar is upstairs and the restaurant area is on a lower level) assures an intimate and friendly dining experience. Decor is modern and very attractive.
We were there on a Sunday, when the food is served buffet style. We were seated in a booth which suited us perfectly and noticed several parties at the attractively decorated round tables celebrating special occasions. Our waitress was willing but either new or not sufficiently well trained. We had to wait an in inordinately long time for our drinks. The choice and quality of foods on the buffet table were excellent. Special mention should be made of the wide choice of desserts!

“Where Money Eats.”
Reviewed April 4, 2013

The alcohol choices are interesting, high end, and eclectic. The food is trendy but atypical. All in all you get the feel that the rich and the powerful fit well here when they're relaxing.
And you'll encounter some without knowing who they are. That kind of rich and powerful.

“Brunch Value”
Reviewed March 25, 2013

Just ate here on Sunday, March 24. This was our fist visit to Brasserie 8 1/2. We had a late morning brunch reservation for my wife and I along with our youngest daughter who lives on the UES in NYC.

We could not have been happier with our brunch experience!! We were seated in a comfortable leather seated booth .The buffet presented had sufficient choices and we found the food to be plentiful, fresh and delicious. (Omelet station, carving station (beef and turkey), crepe station, pasta station, tons of salads, breakfast meats, waffles, pancakes, shrimp, lox, breakfast breads and pastries, etc). Even as the restaurant became significantly more crowded - we never saw any of the food displays lacking - as they consistently refreshed them. Nor did we ever wait in line at any of the stations - they seemed to manage this well. The value for this brunch is extremely hard to beat for NYC!! The only complaint (minor) that I have is that no drinks (juices, sodas, alcoholic, etc) are included in the brunch price.

If you enjoy a buffet - you will be hard pressed to find a better value! Will be back.

“Just Doesn't Do It For Me”
Reviewed February 21, 2013

I've tried to like Brasserie 8 1/2. Recently, I joined friends there for dinner. It was my third visit in the last year. It's hard to describe why I don't like it. First, you walk into a stark, sterile lobby. Then you go downstairs into the basement that is sort of Jetsons-like. The starkness, the red color scheme, it has no atmosphere. It's cold and uninviting.

The food is good, but not great. I had striped bass. It was nicely presented. The service is friendly, but not professional. The wait staff do not seem to know the menu. It is obvious that waiting tables at Brasserie 8 1/2 is their "other job".

Brasserie 8 1/2 is not terrible by any means, but it's not outstanding either. There are so many great restaurants in New York. Why go down to the basement in a restaurant that has no atmosphere (but tries to be modern chic), have good (but not great) food, with a wait staff that is friendly but not knowledgeable.

Zagat gives Brasserie 8 1/2 23 points out of a possible 30. I think this is generous.
