I've tried to like Brasserie 8 1/2. Recently, I joined friends there for dinner. It was my third visit in the last year. It's hard to describe why I don't like it. First, you walk into a stark, sterile lobby. Then you go downstairs into the basement that is sort of Jetsons-like. The starkness, the red color scheme, it has no atmosphere. It's cold and uninviting.

The food is good, but not great. I had striped bass. It was nicely presented. The service is friendly, but not professional. The wait staff do not seem to know the menu. It is obvious that waiting tables at Brasserie 8 1/2 is their "other job".

Brasserie 8 1/2 is not terrible by any means, but it's not outstanding either. There are so many great restaurants in New York. Why go down to the basement in a restaurant that has no atmosphere (but tries to be modern chic), have good (but not great) food, with a wait staff that is friendly but not knowledgeable.

Zagat gives Brasserie 8 1/2 23 points out of a possible 30. I think this is generous.

Enjoyed a quick dinner at the bar...my 3rd visit to Brasserie 8 1/2. The food was very good, creatively presented, innovative blend of flavors, and good service.

I had the beet salad with oranges and an amazing fried goat cheese...wonderful. The sea scallops paired with pork belly was very good...a little underseasoned, but a great combo.

Service was good, even at the bar.

Looking forward to my 4th visit to 8 1/2.

Innovative, delicious food in a sublime setting, below street level but very open and inviting. Wonderful menu and fantastic specials. Great service. Ask to sit near the stained-glass Fernand Leger. The hostess is at street level on the north side of 57th.

We were staying at the Waldorf Astoria during Christmas as we got a great deal from Travelocity. Chose not to eat there for Christmas Day brunch and were we ever glad. We had excellent service, very attentive. Decided on the pre fixe menu and it did not disappoint . Food was fabulous as well as the presentation. We will definitely go back. Recommend it highly.

Found this place thanks to the Zagat guide and would certainly recommend a visit. Not quite as good as other places we've visited this week in New York but not far off. Food delicious and service pretty good.
