I'm far from an expert on authentic Indian cuisine, although I really like Indian food. We were visiting from out of town and went with friends to Sapphire which was selected mainly for its location. (Columbus Circle)
We really enjoyed our visit. We were early side for dinner so as to make an 8:00 Broadway show. The staff was attentive and helpful. Our party all had fairly standard dishes--tandoori chicken, a lamb dish and ginger chicken, along with appetizers, naan, raita, lemon rice and rice with peas. The food was quite tasty and the only serious complaint was the canned peas and carrots in the rice. In this age of local, fresh ingredients, it is hard to understand why even a simple rice dish wouldn't have fresh peas and carrots.
Because this restaurant is convenient to the neighborhood where we visit our friends we would go again. I think that there are probably better Indian restaurants in New York, but this is very good if you are in the Central Park West area.
