Description: Restaurant Aquavit opened to immediate success in midtown Manhattan in November 1987. More than two decades later, Aquavit continues to be one of New York's most popular and highly esteemed dining destinations. A pioneer on the American dining scene, Aquavit remains the only world-class modern Scandinavian restaurant in the country, and was also the first restaurant in New York to house two concepts under one roof: a casual bistro serving hearty, simple fare and a formal dining room offering refined, modern Scandinavian cuisine. Owner Håkan Swahn has always been involved with every aspect of the business, and his passion and vision are what steer the restaurant. Executive Chef Marcus Jernmark is in the kitchen every day, where his talent and his commitment to quality and authenticity are apparent in every ingredient he purchases and every dish he prepares. Swahn and Jernmark collaborate closely on Aquavit's menus, and together they provide leadership and inspiration to the team at Aquavit.

Quite disappointed, after ready about the restaurant and having quite a high expectation. It did not meet up to the high standards of what I would expect a Michelin Star rated restaurant .
Now I was at a group dinner with a fixed menu perhaps that had something to do with it. The starter was really weird a salad with some type of very salty carrots !. The beef was just a bit overcooked.
Service was good but I was disappointed on what was on the plate.

It is not easy to serve a luncheon to 53 tourists in a limited amount of time...but the staff at Aquavit did just that. The preparation was perfect, timely and served by gracious wait staff personnel. The salad was one of the best I have ever had and my fish entrée was absolutely delicious. After a week of eating with my tour group this was a wonderful group meal. On my next trip to NYC, I shall go back for a more intimate experience.

After spending two days in the city seeing two shows, attended a convention, and shopped, we could not wait to sit down and dine at this restaurant. We started at the bar and had a wonderful conversation with the maker of the aquavit and sampled several. They were amazing and he was so informative about how they make it and gave us some good tips on attempting to make our own aquavit. Can't wait to try it, but I have a feeling that they will not taste as good as what we enjoyed there.
On to the dining experience...we chose the Spring Tasting Menu with the wine pairing and because I do not eat red meat, they did allow substitutions. I have to admit I was hesitant to add the wine pairing to our dinner, but they actually were quite good. We were overwhelmed with the flavors, presentation, and overall professionalism of the food and their staff. We left the restaurant with full bellies and with a smile on our faces. We both agreed that we would go back again and would love to share this experience with family and friends.
Check it out....If you are not picky about your reservation time, Groupon does have a reserve option for this restaurant and you can get 30% off your bill.

This was our 7th or 8th trip to Aquavit over the past 10+ years. It is not as good as when Marcus Samuelsson ran the kitchen, but the food is still excellent. We were happy with all the courses, but noticed that the chef's tasting menu for February 2014 included many of the same dishes as the chef's tasting menu of June 2013. A bit surprising considering the different seasons. Nonetheless, those dishes were worth having twice.
Service has declined far more than the food. On our latest visit, we were seated at a cold table next to a window on an evening with temperatures in the teens, despite multiple interior tables being available all night. Our server - Nathaniel - is the embodiment of haughtiness. He gave the classic supercilious sneer and eyebrow raise when asked to describe an ingredient; as if to say, "you philistines don't know what smetana is!?!?" Unfortunately, it was the second time we have had the displeasure of his company. Fortunately, the rest of the staff is much better.

A real Norwegian experience in icy NYC in January. The beet gravad lax was divine, the norwegian cod as good as it has ever been. Amazing mushrooms. Presentation of all dishes was stunning. Excellent, friendly service
