“One of the best!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 12, 2014

We had a wonderful dining experience, will definitely return. I was skeptical at first as the restaurant is located in the lower level, down the stairs in an office building. But don't let that stop you as I said in my title, Sakagura is "One of the best!" A must when you are in NYC!

“Hidden magic”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 10, 2014

You need to know where to find this restaurant. When you get to the place there is nothing to tell you outside, but in the lobby there is a neutral door to this hidden gem.
You can normally get a seat even without reservation, but a reservation i preferable.
The food i pure and simple Japanese with no concessions to it being in NY.
The helpful staff will advice you how many of the small courses you need. (We normally take 4-5 to share) and then advice you on choice of sake or beer to go with it.
It is reasonably priced and the food is just magic!.

“Good hidden Japanese restaurant in Midtown”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 8, 2014

I ate a solo dinner at the bar at sakagura this weekend. I believe that they take reservations, but I showed up a little later in the evening (after 9) and had no trouble getting a seat. I tried a root vegetable dish, soba noodles and eel/cucumber appetizer. These dishes were not anything I had tried before and were all tasty. As others have noted, the food is very authentic and not dumbed down for non-japanese tastes. This restaurant is in the basement of a midtown office building a few blocks from Grand Central and is not the kind of place that you would walk past. I read about this place both here and on Yelp. I would check it out again with other people to sample a larger variety of dishes.

“Most authentic Japanese restaurant we've seen in America”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 22, 2014

We lived in Japan for 3 years, and are usually disappointed with Japanese restaurants in the US. From the moment you head down the anonymous stairs to this hidden magical place, you'll be transported to Japan.

“Seek it out”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 26, 2014

Sakagura is a little hard to find, buried in the basement of an office building. But it's worth the trip down the bleak stairwell.

I had an amazing bowl of soba and crab, and some great yellowtail sashimi. The menu is packed with interesting options, and there's a huge sake selection.

I was in New York on business and went alone, and was welcomed at the bar. The service was attentive. I'd highly recommend this place to anyone who likes Japanese food.
