Had a lovely pre-theater meal at Pigalle before going off to see "Pippin" a couple of weeks ago. It has a nice Paris-like bistro atmosphere to it. We arrived, with no reservation, around 5:45 pm and were seated in a good spot. About 30 minutes later the place was packed with, what looked like, many pre-theater patrons. Service was fast and good and the meal was excellent for a not-so-big price. It is quite close to the theater district, so once you are through it's only another 10-minute walk and you are in your seat.

We were pleasantly surprised by a good meal at Pigalle in October just before the theatre. The food was good, service prompt, if somewhat brusque. I thought the duck breast was quite good. Portions are on the small side, but you are in a French restaurant, after all. Prices on the high end of moderate. The only disappointment was no prix fixe dinner as promised when I made the reservations because there was a special menu for sausages. Too bad it was sausages.

I notice that a recent reviewer say "Nothing special" about Pigalle. I suppose that's true: it is NOT "haute cuisine." Pigalle serves a typical French brasserie menu, well-prepared and tasty, and its operation is geared to getting large numbers of patrons in-and-out in time for the 8 PM curtain at the nearly theaters. And the prices (given that you are in midtown NYC) are really very modest.

They have a very nice breakfast buffet, and half-priced drinks at happy hour. Half-priced, bear in mind, is much better than two drinks for the price of one.

I visited Pigalle as part of a vacation trip in New York City. I was on a daily quest of finding good breakfast places and wanted to try something new every morning. So one time, the choice came down to Pigalle. Here's how my experience goes:

1- Location
It is located on 8th avenue at an intersection of the various Times Square hotels. Only a few blocks from most of them, it is easily accessible on foot through a short walk from all of them and from Times Square.
It is also a couple of blocks away from the New York hop on hop off bus station.

2- The place itself
The restaurant from inside speaks of France a lot through its colors and decoration as it is supposedly a French place. Colors are light brown everywhere from floors, to tables, chairs and the entire seating area. It is not a fancy place so you can just walk in in pure casual wear

3- The menu
It does not offer much to be honest. The food is exactly what you will find in any place in its vicinity. I have been to it in order to try a new breakfast place, but Pigalle offers what you will find in all regular brunch places in the area of Time Square

I recommend Pigalle to try a new thing while in New York but it is not a place you will visit more than once
