“Ok at best”
Reviewed October 9, 2013 via mobile

For Little Italy I expected better. It was average at best. To be honest we can get better food in Italian food in eastern Pennsylvania. Service was good, not great. One plus was it was reasonable by New York standard. Will try another place next time.

“Not worth the trip”
Reviewed September 26, 2013

Il Cortile in Little Italy has a broad menu, decent food, and high prices. The service is fairly efficient, and the decor is pleasant in the dark. The room is loud however if not cacophonous at times. One can certainly find finer, more pleasant Italian restaurants in the area for fewer Euros.

“Great appetizers and pastas”
Reviewed September 24, 2013

The Zucchine Fritte ,Calamari Fritti are great. So are the excellent Linguine with Clams or the Spaghetti Pescatore.
Compliments to the Chef.
I am originally from Rome, and, being a "vero buongustaio" ,I was impressed with the food quality and its preparation.
I was however disappointed somewhat with some details pertaining to the service (table 23): it was somewhat slow ,especially for the bottle of wine being left on the table for several minutes before being uncorked and at the same time having no wine glasses placed simultaneously).
At the end of such a tasty and memorable meal, the espresso "ristretto" would truly need a major ,major improvement!
On this note,it would probably be better for the Restaurant to purchase itself a true Nespresso machine so that it may be able to prepare a real European /Italian Espresso and not one that tasted like those which could be available in NYC in the '70s or 80's!!!
Another constructive criticism, and a very important and useful one, especially considering patrons who might be elderly or handicapped, would be for the restaurant to either build a handicapped rest-room on the ground floor or,alternatively,a small elevator to the basement.
Last but not least,I would like to mention that I have been sofar to numerous restaurants in New York City and,as a party of 2 (TWO)people,as we were the other night,I was somewhat shocked that,on the bill, the restaurant had automatically added itself a 20%tip ,plus an additional amount was expected when the credit card slip was brought back to my table.
I personally found that somewhat absurd and uncalled for ,given the fact we were not even offered a sambuchetta or a liquorino.
I repeat, the food was really very good but the service definitely was not worth more than the 20% already added to the bill.
In good faith ,I would like to return to this good ristorante on Mulberry Street in the near future and give it another chance on a more tranquil night.
I sincerely trust and hope it is going to get a fully deserved A in every respect and not only an A for the food.
Grazie e a presto.
Arrivederci.

This restaurant was recommended by a friend & it did not disappoint. Handmade pasta, charming owner, nice atmosphere, very good service. A little pricey & worth the money. Delicious!

“Authentic Italian”
Reviewed September 23, 2013

We visited Il Cortile in September during the feast of San Gennaro, on the recommendation that this is the best Italian available in Little Italy. We were not disappointed by the food, we ordered a meat ball starter followed by Carbonara and Gnocchi. The food, when it arrived, was delicious, and we bad a good view of the feast from our seats outside of the restaurant. Complimentary bread arrived shortly after ordering, and our drinks soon followed, however it took around 40 minutes for our main dishes to arrive.
The restaurant seemed fairly busy and we were not the only ones who appeared to be waiting. While waiting for the food we were at least entertained by an Accordion player who we initially thought was employed by the restaurant, but later realised he was just taking advantage of the many establishments along Little Italy to earn a dollar or two.
Finally the food arrived and it was enjoyable, perfectly cooked and very tasty authentic Italian. We could not find any fault with the food itself.
Il Cortile is not cheap, for two meals and two drinks, our bill came to 75 dollars, and a 20% tip was automatically added. The service certainly didn't deserve 20% but we did not question it.
Overall it was an enjoyable meal let down by the long wait.
