I can't say enough great things about this place. It was recommended to us by a chef and it didn't disappoint.

We had a wide assortment of grilled meats and fish, including octopus, tuna, sea bass, suckling pig and some absolutely awesome burrata. The wine list is fantastic and features Italian wines from every region.

The environment also makes the dinner. It's very rustic, with candles and large roaring fires in the kitchen.

In short, go here.

My wife and I have been to Peasant's several time and have always been pleasantly surprised by how goodthe food is. We always order something different and it is always very good. Parking can be a little tough until you can park on the street after 6 PM for free, so don't get there too early.

Atmosphere was very nice with a great view of chef/owner created kitchen. Fish dishes skate and bass were very good and wine selection was excellent. Worthy of yet another visit

Peasant is located in an unassuming storefront on Elizabeth st, the inside is comfortable and open. Our waiter, who was actually from Italy, was attentive but not intrusive. My appetizer, Polpi in Purgatorio was excellent with just the right amount of heat. I am usually hesitant to order octopus because i have gotten some rubbery dishes over the years but this was grilled perfectly. For my main course i had Porchetta Arrosto, rotisserie suckling pig, also delicious. I forget the name of the dessert but it was a chocolate flour-less something that also hit its mark.
My only criticism is that we were served very quickly it would have been nice to relax a little between courses. Maybe the fact that we ate when they opened at 6:00 and the restaurant was just starting to fill up had something to do with it.

Visiting NYU in the spring of 2012 and headed for an off-Broadway show in the neighborhood afterwards we walked from Washington Square to meet up with a friend who had chosen Peasant. Quite a pleasant dining experience in the bustling, rustic atmosphere of this fine restaurant. Our table enjoyed the sea bass, goat lasagna, lamb and pizza (our 12 year old son's choice). The wine was fine and service quite attentive although our waiter was relatively new. We did arrive just before opening at 5pm in order to not rush dinner before the show, and were compelled to enjoy a cocktail at the charming, yet cramped bistro next door. A bit pricey, but the food at Peasant is worth it.
