Description: n 1919 Gregorio Garofalo came over from Italy to begin his American dream... He rented a basement, put in his coal stoves, and sprinkled saw dust on the floor. With his knowledge of creating homemade wines, and his passion for cooking, Gregorio's dream began.... The name ..."Puglia" is a region in Southern Italy from which he immigrated. People came from far to indulge in the delicacies Gregorio prepared; Capuzzello (sheepshead), Tripe (the lining of the stomach of a young ox), and Pasta E Fagioli (pasta and beans), but what they loved the most was the way he treated everyone like his own family. Today with his 3rd generation carrying on the recipes and the values he taught them, Gregorio is smiling.... All of us at Puglia thank you for making Gregorio's dream a reality. Buona Sera

“Fantastic Value”

Puglia Restaurant on Hester Street in Little Italy - we dived in here during a pouring rain storm and really fell on our feet. $10.50 for a three course lunch and it was delicious too. Also on Wednesday the deal includes a free glass of wine!

“Our New Place in Little Italy”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 1, 2013

Puglia's is nearly 100 years old, and you can tell why from the food. It's delicious--probably more yummy than one might think upon walking in. But this is old-school Italian: heavy on taste, light on frills. The calamari for two appetizer? Delicious. Have it.

Also worth mentioning was the service (very friendly, honestly gracious),the entertainment (Jorge Buccio, who added greatly to the ambiance!), and the price, which is very reasonable for NYC.

“Surprisingly good food”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 14, 2013

We took my mother in law here for her 93rd birthday because we remembered that there was an Italian singer so we knew she would have a good time. I hadn't been here in 25 years and remembered it as something of a tourist trap. What I didn't expect was that the food would be as good as it was and the staff would be so pleasant. The Veal Marsala was exceptional and everything our group had was very competently prepared and very reasonably priced. We had planned to have dessert at Ferrara's but my mother in law was enjoying the singing so much that we stayed and had desserts there and they were great! The staff and singer were very sweet to my mother in law. Sure there were lots of tourists in there and it is smack in the middle of the most touristy part of Little Italy but I have to say this is a great place.

“the kind of restaurant that stays in business for 100 years”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 13, 2013

There are more expensive (and more pretentious) restaurants in Little Italy, but none with better tomato sauce, and, not coincidentally, none with more guests on a typical evening. It's superb--the kind of tomato sauce that remains a delight in your mouth for the rest of the day. The atmosphere is very informal, and the menu is small and relatively inexpensive. You can understand why this restaurant has been around for more than ninety years.

“Good food and fun!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 17, 2013

We were part of a group of 65 high school students and parents from Mississippi when we visited Puglia's. There was a set menu to choose from but everyone I spoke to enjoyed their choice. Entertainment that evening was provided by Jorge Buccio, the Mexican Elvis. All of his songs were fun, especially the Napkin Song which had us all standing on our chairs and waving our napkins. We will definitely visit again the next time we are back in NYC.
