Description: One of America’s most beloved restaurants, Gramercy Tavern has welcomed guests for close to two decades to enjoy seasonal American cuisine, warm hospitality and unparalleled service. The restaurant is perennially ranked at the top of Zagat Survey’s ‘Most Popular’ list, and has garnered eight James Beard Awards including ‘Outstanding Restaurant’ and ‘Best Chef: NYC’. Chef Michael Anthony’s highly seasonal menu consists of elegant dishes with a rustic influence that showcase the restaurant’s relationships with local farms and purveyors. The Main Dining Room serves prix-fixe menus starting at $92 for dinner and an a la carte menu for lunch, and accepts reservations 28 days in advance. The more casual Tavern serves an a la carte menu centered around the wood burning grill, and welcomes guests on a walk-in basis. The restaurant also features an acclaimed wine list, and thoughtfully selected beer and cocktail offerings.

OK, this isn't 3 star Michelin type dining, but in its category I have rarely found better. Reviews on Tripadvisor rave about it, so we went to see what all the fuss is about. Lunch - midweek. We arrived a little early, but that wasn't a problem. The rear part of the restaurant appeared to be slightly more formal and soon started filling with business types. We were on holiday, so got stuck into marvellous cocktails whilst having difficulty choosing from the menu - too many wonderful sounding items! Starters of fish soup and a strange sounding cauliflower dish - soup ok, cauliflowers simply brilliant! Main of a staggeringly brilliant pork croquette and flat iron steak done blue (perfect). Finished with beautifully kept American cheeses and Mrs had something called a semifreddo which she enjoyed. All in all quite superb, service too, hit the mark spot on. 2 hours later, 2 cocktails, 2 bottles of wine, $261.85 before tip - and off we wobbled to the airport. Great fun and highly recommended. Tripadvisor, in this case, has got it right.

“Charming”
Reviewed January 18, 2013

Having eaten in both the restaurant and the tavern, we prefer the tavern. This time, as always, we enjoyed warm, attentive service and lovely food. It's a place we go to when we feel like we need "comfort food" though in saying that, the food is very good indeed with some surprising combinations that exceed expectations. We are always made to feel welcome here which is a great feeling when far from home. For us, a NYC staple.

The food is always good at Gramercy. The service is spot on. Start to finish the experience is always great. It isn't cheap but you get your money's worth. Be sure to arrive early. Have a drink and relax as you wait for your table!

“Amazing!!”
Reviewed January 17, 2013

Gramercy Tavern is amazing! For starters Top Chef Judge Tom Colicchio and restaurant developer Danny Meyer started it, so Gramercy Tavern is pretty much the best of the best when it comes to celebrity chefs/recognizable names in the food world. Tom is no longer a part of it, but his legacy with the restaurant can still be seen and tasted! We sat in the back part of the restaurant; the front is called the Tavern and is small, crowded and loud! The bar area is connected to it, so be prepared to stand and drink if you arrive before your table is ready. Our party enjoyed the prix-fixe three-course menu and it was out of this world! The wait staff was extremely attentive and accommodated my special dietary requirements! You start you meal off with a tiny cheese puff, then appetizer, main course, palate cleanser, dessert, assortment of mini desserts and end with a take home muffin! I cannot even begin to describe how wonderful our meal was and the people watching was awesome! Definitely a must eat place while in New York…that is if you can snag a table!

“Outstanding food and service”
Reviewed January 16, 2013

I would recommend the dining room in the rear -- which is like a totally different restaurant than the front room, which offers a small menu of small dishes.
The back room is definitely a great choice for a celebratory occasion, particularly with a group of 4 - 10 people. The prix-fixe menu offers a lot of choice -- and if different members of your party offer different things, it is great to share tastes of each other's dishes.

Overall, the food is excellent, with imaginative combinations of ingredients. The servers are among the best I have experienced in New York -- very polished, professional, and very familiar with the menu. The atmosphere is lovely and elegant, with tall ceilings, dark walls, and tables spaced far enough from each other that there is a lot of privacy.

The dinner prices are high -- but definitely worth it!
