We were wandering over on 1st ave the other day when we stopped into Sutton Pizzeria for a quick slice. Whoa! Wait a minute!!! They don't make it like this on Lex!!!
I have never bothered to look for pizza, while here in the city, as though it were anything special. It is a staple in most NYer's diets, and while most real NYers will tell you their favorite places, mine has been closed for about 10 years so I must admit, I'm not the one to ask. That is, until this month, when I rediscovered my love or pizza once again, thanks to Sutton Pizzeria!
The crust is just perfect... light, crisp, tasty. They way the old guys who own it spread the sauce on a new pie is like art. You have to see it to appreciate the pride they take in their work.
Now there are caveats: the young'er' (probably son) who seems to have the run of the place is sloppy in how he does things and speaks to people (the goofed up on two subsequent phone orders and was nasty), but hey, that's NY (sometimes).
It's worth it! Go over to 1st Ave and have a slice. It is really worth the haul. Nothing comes close between 3rd and 6th Aves, at least not in midtown.
