“Dessert anyone?”
Reviewed December 7, 2013

A sweet lover's paradise, Café Lalo is located at 201 W 83rd St on the Upper West Side. It's about a $15 cab ride from the theater district and well worth the trip for after-show drinks and desserts. Expect it to be crowded on the weekend, but the food is worth the wait. Only grump was that the music was more appropriate to a club than a café, though it wasn't blaring. It's brightly lit and bustling - if you want quite and reserved, you might think twice. However, a mint chocolate chip shake with peppermint schnapps and black forest cake made for a wonderful nightcap.

“Excellent bistro”
Reviewed December 4, 2013

A taste of France on the UWS. Sometimes overcrowded with tourists but plenty of locals as well. Service can be spotty and it is pricey but worth the splurge every so often. Breakfast especially recommended.

“Nice place for dessert and coffee”
Reviewed December 3, 2013

Stopped in for dessert and coffee at Café Lalo. The cappuccino was very good but the desserts were just OK. We ordered the Mocha Cake and the Triple Mousse Ecstasy. CL offers a very large selections of cakes, pies, pastries, and other goodies. The menu includes exquisite coffees, cocoas, and shakes as well as Cordials, Liqueurs, beers and other cocktails. Check out their menu online. Very loud so not a place to sit to relax and talk. Nice atmosphere and good service.

“I could have made a better dessert at home”
Reviewed December 1, 2013

You know how some places get a reputation and somehow keep getting repeat biz even though the reality is a far cry below the rep and the emperor has no clothes? This is such a place. Went here last night, having never heard of it, and all I can say is if this is the 'best café in NY' god help us. It was pretty, definitely a 'scene' though there aren't enough tables and it's super cramped. All the pastries in the counter look amazing as you walk in, and some may very well be, but shouldn't all the sweets be up to snuff in a place like this?

I ordered the 'chocolate indulgence' which is described as a flourless chocolate piece of heaven. What I got was a cold, yes cold slab of what looked and tasted like Hershey bars that had been melted down and reconstituted into a brick. It was not good, as all choc should be. On top was what tasted like a heaping pile of cool whip or equivalent and strawberries. And for this 'I could have had better in the frozen foods aisle of any grocery store' I paid $8.50. If I hadn't been with people I didn't know well I'd have told the waitress that I shouldn't have to pay for it.

Here's a hint, Lalo - anything labeled indulgence should be delicious and served warm, unless it's ice cream. People who are raving about this place being like a Parisian café can't possibly have ever been to one (or they high, not sure which).

“What an amazing find!”
Reviewed November 20, 2013 via mobile

I was sent to Cafe Lalo by a friend while visiting NYC. What a perfect place to spend my first morning in the city! I had the Italian breakfast and a Mimosa and my friend had an English Breakfast and Mimosa. The service was very fast and the food came out hot and within 10 minutes. I would suggest this to anybody who is going to be in the area!
