This restaurant came highly recommended and it didn't disappoint. We arrived about 10 minutes early. Our table wasn't ready so we went to the bar. This is a typical NYC restaurant, tables are in close proximity of each other and it's loud. If you are looking for a romantic evening, this isn't the place. If you are looking for high energy and great food, Balthazar fits the bill. When we were finally seated Brahim took our our order. We split the BALTHAZAR SALAD with haricots verts, asparagus, fennel, ricotta salata, and truffle vinaigrette. More than enough for two. Delicious. For our main course we split the STEAK AU POIVRE* with spinach and pommes frites. Again, more than enough, served hot and in a timely manner. It was my birthday so they brought out a dip of chocolate ice cream with a candle. A nice touch. The only downside of the night was listening to two couples, seated inches away from us discussing politics. That's the last thing we wanted to do on a Friday night after a busy week. Other than that, great restaurant, great decor. Highly recommend.

We came here for a special occasion dinner reserved well ahead, then got in some Manhattan traffic and I was worried about being late, so I phoned and the maître d’ thanked me when we arrived; our table was a bit tight with our neighbours but this is typical for a bistro and once we got a drink and some bread we stopped caring; good cocktails and we shared escargots to start and then ordered the chicken, short ribs and steak followed by a cheese course rather than dessert. Good food, really good wine from a list with all price points, and a wonderful server who we got to know a little once the rush was over. If personal space is a big thing, request a booth when you reserve-or just get over it and enjoy meeting your neighbours! There’s a reason Balthazar is a legend.

That was what the manager said when we asked for a different table. And it was true! The staff bends over backward to serve and take care of you. It also doesn't hurt that the food is excellent!

Great place. It is not just reputation. My party couldn't settle for a table and we were courteously shown other options, without any fuss. Service was nice and informative. The duck is to die for, tender off the bone and the sauce does not overwhelm the flavors. Wine choices are great and of all kinds of quality and price range. The mille-feuille desert is amazing.
