We went to Gotham for dinner with some friends who dine there fairly regularly. One thing that struck me immediately upon entering the dining room was its very inviting design and ambience. I appreciated that the tables were not right on top of each other, which is sometimes the case in New York restaurants. Some people might not like the noise level. Though it's not as high as in some other places, it is still a fairly loud room.
Almost all of our dishes (especially soft-shell crabs and Muscovy duck) were excellent. A chicken and foie gras terrine could have had a bit more of the foie gras to make it a truly excellent dish. A pistachio and cherry mousse dessert was very tasty and pretty to look at.
The one true downer of the evening was our server. She rarely smiled and offered only the most perfunctory answers to questions. I think they have to try a little bit harder. Dinner at the Gotham is not inexpensive and customers should be able to expect some more enthusiasm from the servers.
