What a relief from the shi-shi nonsense that plagues the rest of Manhattan's sushi scene. If you want reasonably priced, fresh, delicious fish --- this is the place!

Downside : No reservations --- I guess you will have to wait to be rewarded.

My friends raved, "You have to go to Tomoe". Maybe my expectations were too high, but our experience was just average. Luckily, we had a very patient friend who was willing to wait in line. The line part of the experience tends to amp up expectations -- "if all these people are waiting in line, it must be great." We finished shopping in Soho and bopped across Houston to Thompson for dinner. We did get seated right away, thanks to our friend -- but at 7:30 the wait was probably already more than an hour. We sat down in this very downscale and small dining room -- simple wooden tables. The waiter brought some marinated bean sprouts. They were ok (might have had MSG if that matters to you). We experimented with the chef's selection of sushi -- and a variety of other rolls. And, miso soup -- which was really underwhelming. And, the sushis and makis were just okay. Not so thrilling. Our conclusion as we left was that it was just less expensive. Sometimes diners rate on different criteria -- this reputation must be built on the relative cheapness of the sushi. Just not that great.

for a great middle range sushi place, tomoe is the way...serious business, good value, you will stand in line, it only sits about 40, an "in the know" place in the village...do not be fooled by the place one block north with similar name (ripped off to take advantage of "real Tomoe"), enjoy, fair prices, good experience, recommend highly if you have the patience.

A quirky place without many of the usual recommendations of the likes of Zagat etc, very much doing its own thing. Good sushi and other Japanese cuisine; bustling atmosphere, and not at all pretentious. Doesn't accept bookings or credit cards - quaint!
