As a rule, I'm not a huge fan of Greek food. I don't eat lamb or feta cheese, so I've avoided Greek dishes. That changed tonight at Periyali in New York's Flatiron District. Meeting an old friend for dinner - he chose the restaurant - at this small, long-time (by New York standards) haunt resulted in a fabulous dinner. Instead of ordering entrees, we ordered four appetizers - roasted beets/garlic dip; calamari/garlic dip; caviar/veggies/shrimp; and the house speciality, octopus - a must-have if you visit. Be sure to pair the meal with a good wine. Periyali has a good wine list, including some interesting Greek wines. Service was wonderful - just enough attention to be good without hovering. Acoustics make it a good place for conversation, despite the close quarters. If you're interested in Greek food in the city, go to Periyali. You won't be disappointed.

The food and wine are just fantastic. Try the grilled calamari appetizer; it is arguably the best in all 5 boros of NYC -. Staff is friendly, professional and very knowledgably. Décor is simple and attractive. The entire family loves this place.

I've never been to a place where the toilet was cleaner than the restaurant. When you show the waiters the dirty food encrusted silverware and lipstick glasses they replace it with dirtier ones. I can't see how they stay in business. Consider this review your tip.

We spend a really nice time here.
Food is very good, we were 3 so we tried many different dishes.
Atmosphere is nice and refine but not too trendy.
Service is good and the waiter suggested different specialities and wines.

Been back to Periyali a couple of times in the past couple of months. This latest visit (Sunday, Mar 23) just convinced me again what strong management and conscientious kitchen staff can accomplish - as well as a respectable clientele. At first nervous because the service was off to a very slow start after sitting down, the server and staff quickly redeemed themselves once they got going. From the little accompaniments while we thought over our order to the attentive yet not overwhelming service during the meal. Check out the specials: the seas bass (local) was simply amazing and the on-menu house specialty grilled octopus was worth the little bit of over-eating we indulged in! Although they don't have a separate wine-by-the-glass menu, the waiter's recommendations were appreciated - accurate and enjoyed! Also important, maybe cause it was a Sunday evening, it was nevertheless VERY welcome to not have to shout across the table while dining; clientele was mixed age ranges and overall quite relaxed and having fun (no screamers or loud-laughers thankfully!). Cant wait to go back!
