As a rule, I'm not a huge fan of Greek food. I don't eat lamb or feta cheese, so I've avoided Greek dishes. That changed tonight at Periyali in New York's Flatiron District. Meeting an old friend for dinner - he chose the restaurant - at this small, long-time (by New York standards) haunt resulted in a fabulous dinner. Instead of ordering entrees, we ordered four appetizers - roasted beets/garlic dip; calamari/garlic dip; caviar/veggies/shrimp; and the house speciality, octopus - a must-have if you visit. Be sure to pair the meal with a good wine. Periyali has a good wine list, including some interesting Greek wines. Service was wonderful - just enough attention to be good without hovering. Acoustics make it a good place for conversation, despite the close quarters. If you're interested in Greek food in the city, go to Periyali. You won't be disappointed.
