“Great Affordable Apartment in the East Village”
Reviewed June 28, 2017 for a stay in June 2017

We stayed at Katharine's Apartment for 4 nights in June. The apartment had everything we needed. It was on the 2nd floor. We had plenty of extra towels, pillows. Air Conditioner worked great. Unit had a small fridge, microwave, iron, tea maker and hair dryer. Wifi worked well. The unit was close walking distance to the 8th St R,W Train and 6 Train. Very convenient location and safe area. McSorleys Irish Ale House is only 2 blocks which we visit twice, along with a 24 hour convenience store. We would highly recommend this apartment for a nice, affordable stay in NYC any time of year. Katherine always responded quickly via email with any questions we had prior to our stay.

“Comfort, privacy and location”
Reviewed December 26, 2016 for a stay in December 2016

We stayed at Katharine’s for 2 weeks at the beginning of December. We now have a favourite place to return to whenever we’re in NYC! The studio was wonderful. Exactly as described and shown in photos. What isn’t shown or described is the professionalism and warmth Katharine provides. Complete privacy, but on-hand if you need anything. I knocked out the power in the apartment while there and she was incredibly gracious and kind. I stress that there was no issue with electrics in the apartment. Communication before arriving was also very prompt and detailed. Extra towels, blankets, pillows and heaters if needed, and tea and coffee provided. The position is superb, with 2 Subway lines nearby, as well as St Mark’s Place, Bleeker St, restaurants, cafes and bars. We had the best time, and that was so much in part due to the great find of Katharine’s.

“a find”

The studio is exactly as Katharine describes and suited us very well.

I graduated from a university in the Midwest 30 years ago. Some of the more motivated alumini moved to New York afterwards and I used to visit them. Katharine’s place reminded me of their flats. Quirky, nothing fancy, a bit 'make do' - and it does shake when a particularly large truck trundles by at night – but welcoming, comfortable. It was our cosy sanctuary to ‘come home to’ in the spectacular madness that is New York.

New York has moved on greatly in the last 3 decades and this location, which used to be edgy and arty but also always had a hint of danger in the air, is now gentle, safe, and very fashionable. Walking from the flat to destinations in Lower Manhattan allowed us to experience how the atmosphere shifts from one area to the next. For places in Midtown, Brooklyn, or Queens, the two subway lines nearby served us well.

There are plenty of grocery shopping possibilities (though we ended up mostly at the Whole Foods Market a few blocks away). There are a large number of eateries and some tiny theatres in the immediate neighbourhood, too.

“Suitable for young travellers”

Katherine was very friendly, explained how to get about the area, however this area is more suited for young travellers as it is near a university.
The apartment was very basic, the staircase up to the apartment was very narrow, there was no kitchen as such no cooker although there was a microwave toaster and kettle.

Management Response
Oct 16, 2015
To respond to this review I'd just like to say that whether you find my place to be basic, charming, or anything else, the photos (many of which were actually taken by a TripAdvisor photographer) accurately show my studio as it is.
My written description says my studio "comes with a small fridge, a coffee-make, an electric kettle, a toaster, and a microwave --- but no other cooking facilities." It's precisely to compensate for this lack of cooking facilities that I've made my rent so low. But the review, both by the poor two star rating and by saying there was only a microwave toaster and kettle, seems to imply that the description of my place was somehow misleading.
Also --- although, as in many parts of the city, there is indeed a university near by, that in no way means that the area is "more suited for young travelers". Greenwich Village is one of the most historically rich, culturally vibrant, and popular areas of the city for people of all ages.
While I'm certainly sorry that this reviewer wasn't as satisfied as most of my guests, I'd at least like to be clear that (with the exception of the narrow staircase which she did not know about in advance) there were no surprises here --- and that the situation she found herself in was exactly the situation she chose.

“Not 'posh' but homely - Brilliant little find”

Loved staying in this little studio flat on the edge of Greenwich/East Village. It felt more like staying in someone's home rather than a hotel/guest house. If you want luxuries it's not the place for you. Quite basic but perfect for what we were looking for. 2 minutes from the subway and ease of access to everywhere. For the price of 3/4 nights in a hotel we stayed at Katherine's studio for 2 weeks which enabled us to have a really good look round New York. Bed is firm but we slept surprising well. Roadworks outside but fairly quiet area and noise didn't keep us awake.
In a nutshell, Katherine is lovely, friendly and helpful. Lots of maps and leaflets we found invaluable. We were able to come and go as we pleased. Studio is clean and comfortable without luxuries but for us we would definitely stay there again and recommend to family and friends.

Liked best: Affordability and location
Liked least: The heat in New York. During the 2 week stay it varied between late 20s and mid 30s. very hot for us.

“Nice appartment in a central and safe area.”
Reviewed April 19, 2015 for a stay in April 2015

Close to 2 subway-stations. Walkingdistance to several coffee-shops, vintageshopping, restaurants and bars. It is possible to walk to Little Italy, Chinatown and Soho, if you like and have the time for it. Little noise after 01 A.M so you will not have trouble sleeping. Nice lady renting out the place, she lives on the same floor. No cleaning during stay, but extra towels etc. in the appartment. Possible to make coffee, tea and light snacks in the appartment as well. We enjoyed our stay and would book it if we ever go to NYC again.
