Great selection of oystetrs, and fantastic lobster sandwich - simple and sophisticated at the same time. Very friendly staff.

Wow, this was our best meal in NYC all week. What a surprise to find such a charming place on 5th Ave. We visited right after a late afternoon visit to the Empire State Building. We had the kids (11 and 13) with us and they were definitely welcome. We had oysters and pasta with homemade shrimp sausage and the most amazing brussel sprouts ever. The staff is great and really seems to enjoy being there. This place also was not filled with tourists and felt like a vey authentic farm to table restaurant.

One comes to expect good food in NYC - it's a cutthroat restaurant environment and the sub-par places don't last very long.

However this place stands out - we were blown away by the innovative, fantastically tasty food and great service. The escargots in marrow sound strange but is one of the best preparations of escargot I've ever had. I usually like my oysters au naturel - without mignonette or other additions - but if you're lucky enough to have the celery granita, try that baby out. It enhances the oyster's natural flavor without masking that delicious briny tang. The brussel sprouts prepared two ways is a copy of the dish from their other restaurant Almond and is just as good. Finally the cervice has some interesting twists in flavor which are very pleasant surprises.

The place has an afterwork crowd on weekdays and can get loud, particularly at the front which is quite cramped by the bar. Make reservations and try to get to the back if you can for a quieter experience. Staff is very helpful, friendly and efficient.

If you love oysters, you'll love the recently opened L&W Oyster Co. restaurant located at 254 Fifth Avenue, but be warned, you will pay a hefty price for each and every one of the tasty bivalves! And they're worth it. The corn-spiked chowder is terrific, as are the crab cakes. I've only been there for lunch but I hear that the dinner scene is quite lively. The atmosphere is as beachy as you're going to get in Manhattan. Funky benches designed, I suppose, to make you feel like you are sitting on a boardwalk. It all works. It's pricey but good.
