Louro is a must try. And once tried, it'll be a must repeat. Over and over.
Louro is a casual but sophisticated, laid back but energetic bistro in the heart of the West Village. I ate there with a friend (who is a chef) the night after we'd gone to Eleven Madison Park (a favorite of mine). Louro was the perfect complement to our EMP experience, and, naturally, an extreme bargain in comparisoin. While EMP is in a class by itself as far as ingenuity and presentation, the chef at Louro is turning out equally delicious food in a relaxed environment.
My advice: Start with a drink at the bar where you can engage the friendly and intelligent bartender. Then move to a table so you can experience the equally friendly and intelligent wait staff. Share as many dishes as you can, and do NOT, under any circumstance, skip over the bone marrow small plate (one of the good tips we received from the bartender). As others have noted, the piri piri shrimp pack a kick, and they were the best cooked shrimp I've had in a long time (including the scorched and dry ones in my salad at Trattoria Il Mulino earlier that day).
But it doesn't really matter what you order, because each dish we had was superb. Just get over there and be sure to thank the chef, who is likely to be standing by the door, on your way out.
