Everything here is authentic and delicious armenian lebanese. It's even better than the one in Beirut. Wonderfully spiced, excellent meat, fresh vegetables and the owner's eye on top of things. Must have kibbe nayé, soujouk al mayass, soujok normal, Hummus, mantes …
Waiters were very nice, the setting is amazing! one side restaurant other side has more of bar setting.
Don't live in new York but can't wait to go back, sent several friends there and all agree!! Top notch food Please keep it up!

Service, in a word, was OUTSTANDING. Decor and ambience is beautiful and food is excellent. Our server, Roy, must have several clones of himself. He was never more than a glance away. Our baby kept dropping napkins. As soon as they dropped we had another one delivered. Water in our glasses never fell below the half full mark While we absolutely loved the house hummus, lamb, lasagna like dish and everything we ordered, there was one we weren't crazy about (raviolis) because they had too much yoghourt for our particular taste. Without saying a word, the owner (?) came round to ask if we didn't like it, if we wanted something else, perhaps redone without the yoghourt, some other dish prepared for takeout? We gratefully declined because we were full. When the bill came the dish was not charged. Again, this is what Excellent service is all about. I am sure we will return.

If you want to try something different and tasty, Almayass might just be the ticket. The food is Middle Eastern, North African fusion. The restaurant has a nice ambiance with a great entry area. The wait staff were all attentive and the owner visited the tables. Food was very good. The Almayass and Arugula salads were uniformly excellent. Very fresh greens and the cheese was excellent. We sampled two hummus dishes that were both good, though oily by our standards. However, the oil made them creamy. Two of us has the Almayass delight entree. It is advertised as pieces if filet mignon. The wait staff asked how we wanted the meat prepared. We wanted medium-rare. The dish comes out with about 1/2 cup of small pieces of fillet and they were all well-done. However, the taste was good. The chicken kebob was a definite winner and the khashkhash kebob was the tastiest of the batch. Desserts were mainly ice cream or sorbet for our party. The rose sorbet is really intense. If you like the smell of roses, try it. Some of us thought it was good and others thought they were eating rose perfume. The chocolate cake was above average but not outstanding. Overall, a very enjoyable meal at a reasonable price.

A group of 5 had dinner here on a recent Saturday night. We had reservations and were seated right away. We had a variety of appetizers, salads, and entrees. Everything was very tasty. Service was OK, nothing poor, but nothing special. Fairly extensive menu. I'd suggest asking the servers for recommendations or more descriptions if this is your first time here.

Before I review my first experience eating at Almayass, I have to say that the service was exceptional by New York’s already high standards. From the last minute reservation (using the OpenTable app), to being seated, to being served, to being given a bonus dessert and the check, it was memorable not only for the dishes, but for the attentive service. They made my wife and I feel special.

Manhattan has two world class Lebanese restaurants that I know of, Ilili and Almayass. Both are favorites of ours. Both are in the Flatiron District / Park Avenue South / Union Square area, which probably has the highest concentration of world class restaurants in the city.

Both Ilili and Almayass have bars that are far enough from the dining area to create their own atmosphere and scene. Both have exceptional cocktails (especially the ones with arak / ouzo, a clear, herbal liquor that tastes like licorice and turns cloudy in ice). And both shine brightest in their large selection of small plates. At both places, you can skip the entrees, and fill yourself on the sharable small plates. You probably won’t be disappointed with anything you choose.

We chose the following small plates:

First, the complimentary bread chips and pita are first rate. That’s a little meal in itself, and can be used to scoop up all the small plate items to follow.

Our first order was the Mautabbak Almayass. Think of it as a red hummus. Beets are ground into a fine paste, which is squeezed into a small bowl, and topped with olive oil, garlic, and lemon juice. Simply put, if you love hummus, you will love this. It is surprisingly easy to dip into and by itself is quite a memorable start to a meal here.

The second dish was the spicy potato, which went well with the next two orders. Think of these potatoes as home fries, but amazingly done. These are featherweight cubes of potato, lightly fried so that the outside is crisp, and yet, a fork can easily pierce the cubes with almost no effort. Lightly salted and seasoned with cilantro, they might become the best fried potatoes you ever had. They are so light, they feel hollow (they are not), and are addictive.

The third dish was the Mantee Traditional. Tiny, crispy, open ended beef raviolis (think tiny bowties) served alongside a thick, salty yogurt sauce (closer to cheese in taste that yogurt, which would be expected from anyone familiar with Lebanese cuisine). The crunch of the pasta, the earthy spice of the beef, and the salty smoothness of the yogurt all blend together for something special.

And rounding out the tapas was the hot feta cheese. It is served melted in a bowl, topped with a blend of tomatoes, oregano, and red peppers, and served with bread chips. It is undeniably feta, meaning it is very salty. But being melted, and blended in with tomatoes, it tastes like a great pizza. And we loved it.

So there we were, full, and ready to go and rave about this place. But our server sold us on sharing a dessert - the Ashta with Assal. Ashta is clotted cream. With the Ashta with Assal, you get a small plate of clotted cream, maybe half an inch thick, topped with chopped pistachios, and served with a honey pourer. You decide how much honey to pour over this dry, delicious mix of milk and nuts. Needless to say, we poured on the honey and almost finished the dessert.

The manager stopped by our table and learned that not only were we impressed, but it was our first time there. He made sure we got a bunch of red grapes to clean our palate. Great first impression. Great final impression. Great food! We’ll be back!
