“Mediterranean flair in NY city!”
Reviewed July 14, 2013

We were invited to meet friends in this restaurant. All of us hasn't eaten in this place. We were impressed with the decor, the ambiance was nice. It did started to get a little loud as the evening went on because the restaurant was getting filled. However, the food was excellent. My favorite was the shish kebab! I mean, it's a middle eastern, Armenian restaurant after all , they did not disappoint. The portion was just enough to satisfy your appetite. The staff was also accommodating, taking the time to explain what the dishes were and made recommendation that suited our tastes.

“Top Notch Armenian Food”
Reviewed July 12, 2013

We are always on the look-out for delicious Armenian food and it is hard to find outside of Los Angeles. Almayass is now our go-to place in NYC. The food is spot on (some really great traditional Armenian dishes) and the wait staff was excellent. We went on an off-hour so can't make any comments to the noise level. That said the atmosphere and decor of the restaurant is very nice. Very happy to have found this place and will be returning often.

“Too Loud to enjoy the food!”
Reviewed June 10, 2013

We researched this pretty carefully, because we'd invited some friends who love Middle Eastern food. We got there in a deluge, and the restaurant was quite strikingly decorated, but pretty loud.
We pressed on, ordering hot messe, which were very delicious. But the din was rising as more people came. We pressed through the entrees. I was surprised that rice was extra and there were no vegetables that came with the entrees. It struck me as unnecessarily stingy.
I think there is no soundproofing whatever-- the room was basically a plastered box. The tables were large, so that added to it all, calling across the table to our guests over the thumping music. I had to shout to be heard, and by the end of the meal, I was hoarse and exhausted. There is more to running a restaurant than just cooking well. And in the quest for the most delicious food, we forget that ambience allows you to enjoy the chef's artistry.

Dear Greenie5584,

Thank you for your constructive feedback. I am very sorry to hear that the noise level tarnished your overall dining experience, especially since it sounds like you enjoyed the dishes. We certainly agree that ambiance is important to a relaxing restaurant visit. Many of our guests enjoy our atmosphere, but we will be sure to follow up on the plausible solutions for more soundproofing. Thanks for taking the time to reach out about this! We hope that we'll have the chance to welcome you back in the future.

Best regards,

“Middle Eastern magic”
Reviewed June 1, 2013

We enjoy Middle Eastern food and wanted to try something a little different during our stay in NYC and picked Almayass after reading reviews on Trip Advisor and in Zagats. An added bonus was that it was within walking distance of our hotel.

The restaurant is nicely decorated and the ambiance relaxing and welcoming.

Having never eaten Armenian food before, we were happy to be guided by the recommendations of our waiter, and were so glad we did. All the dishes we had were excellent, but the standouts were the Armenian pastrami canapés with fried quail eggs (these were so good we could easily have eaten a plate each rather than share!), and the Armenian beef sausage which were flambéed at the table for a little added theatre. The lentils and rice mezze dish was much more tasty and moreish (addictive!) than it might sound and the beef kebabs were equally delicious.

We had a minor mishap early in the evening when, after pouring our first glasses of red wine, the waiter accidently knocked my glass and spilt it on the table and in my lap. Luckily I had my table napkin on my lap and I was wearing a black wool skirt, so it wasn't a total disaster. Accidents like this happen, but what distinguishes a great restaurant from a mediocre one is the way in which the wait staff and restaurant owner handle the situation. The waiter couldn't have been more apologetic and was clearly embarrassed, but quickly went about rectifying the situation and making us comfortable at another table. The owner was very gracious about the incident - he came to see us not long after to apologise, make sure everything was okay and generously offered a dessert on the house as a token of his hospitality.

We are heading back to NYC today after spending a few days in Boston, and will definitely be making a return visit to Almayass before we head for home.

This restaurant is a "must visit"!!!

Thank you for giving us a try! We're happy to hear that you enjoyed your waiter's recommendations, especially considering that this was your first foray into Armenian food. Again, we're sorry for that mishap with your wine glass. That is unusual for us, and we're glad that we could get you re-seated and taken care of right away, though. We look forward to welcoming you back very soon!

Cheers,

“Great food, passionate service”
Reviewed May 24, 2013 via mobile

Picked this testaurant based on review on trip advicer via (off-line) city guide. (city guide app is the best friend for travellers, by the way)
The food was outstanding. We ordered two starters, 3 main course and 1 dessert for 3 people. Favorite: King's choice: bite size fillet mignon. The beef was tender and perfectly seasoned, the dessert was really good! Forgot the name but it was a crispy cake covered with fluffy cotton candy. So good!
Our server, Henry, was the key that made everything even better. He was passionate recommending the dishes. Very attentive and always smiling. Such high touch service that we asked for his name! My friends were happy and surprised I, a visitor, can find such lovely restaurant that they locals never knew about. Would definitely visit again next trip!
